Recommended Oil

Hi folks:

I own a 2008 tacoma 2.7 liter 2wd. My owners manual recommends I use 0w-20 or 5w-20. Would there be a big problem if I used 5w-30 instead? The reason I ask is, because walmart sells the oil i buy (mobil 1 fully synthetic extended performance) in only 5w-30 viscosity, and it is significantly cheaper than buying 5w-20 at the auto parts store. Would using 5w-30 cause any problems to my engine such as extra wear during start up? Would there be a major difference in fuel economy? Or should I just not do this and go with the 5w-20? By the way, I live in South Florida. I would like to know what your thoughts are on this. Very much appreciated.

Use what it calls for, the 5w-20. I can get the Mobile fully synthetic
5w-20 at our WalMart, but if you can't pay the couple extra bucks at Auto Zone. just my opinion.

Use what it calls for. You'd probably be just fine with 5w30 but I'd go with the what the manual says.

Answer: No. You do not need to use a 5w20 oil. The only reason 5w20 was specified for your engine is to increase the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) reported to the Federal Government. CAFE is the combined average fuel economy of all of a vehicle manufacturer's product line. Minimum CAFE levels are specified by the Federal Government. In order for a vehicle manufacturer to continue selling profitable large trucks and SUV's, which typically have poor fuel mileage, and still meet mandated CAFE requirements, they must also sell smaller cars which have much better fuel economy ratings to offset the poor fuel economy ratings of the larger vehicles.

Thanks for the input guys. Based on what you guys say and pointed me to, I will try the 5w-30 and report to see if I can notice anything, especially fuel consumption. I have been keeping track with the 5w-20.

you can absolutely use 5W30, it's not going to wreck anything.

 

Have a 2011 4 door PreRunner V6 and was all set to change the oil early, at 2500 miles. Looked at the manual, went to the owners website, and cruised to WalMart and brought 0W-20 Mobile One. Was ready to rock until I opened the hood and read 'Use Only 5W-30 Oil'. Now I'm confused. Think the 0W-20 is what's called for even though while I'm good with the zero W part of the equation I can't for the life of me understand 20 weight oil in the Alabama summer. recommendations?

 

0w-20 is the spec for the 4cylinder engine and 5w30 is the spec for the 6cylinder engine which you state having. Do not run 0w-20 in the 6 cylinder the thicker oil is because you are running direct acting mechanical bucket cams.Which needs a better shear rated oil to reduce wear on the cams. It will also void your warranty.
