Earlier this summer I was dropping off scrap metal at the recyclers during the end of a heavy rainstorm. A flash flood had occurred and I drove through the aftermath. The deepest parts came up to the bottom of my doors. Wonder if I should inspect things?

If everyone would do this (most simple) mod, you wouldn't need to wonder if your fluid is contaminated. It will be milky if it is.

I have my own set of photos and a thread on how I did the mod... in my sig.

What's everyone's say on adding a filter (fuel etc) at the end of the breather line?

An open filter like a little k&n or something is more seceptable to getting wet....if you use the part numbers that the OP recommended, you shouldn't have to worry about water intrusion. Plus, the toyota breather would take up less space...

It really is up to you :)

An old thread but still relevant. I have a three week old access cab TRD off road and when I crawled under to have a look, sure enough the rear diff has the breather mounted on it.

I do not need to be conviced of the need to move the vent up as I have done this on a series of trucks. I do have a clarifying question though.

I found the two remote vents in the engine compartment and see in this thread that they come from the transfer case and some other gizmo.

Am I correct in assuming that there is a need for a remote vent on a front diff that must be buried in there?

    Thanks,

    Peter

Front diff is vented up to the top of the engine already. Do this mod and go behind the driver's side tail light.

Dumb question, so let's say about a year ago I got stuck in water for about an hour while I waited for someone to pull me out. I do not have this mod, so what now?

Change the rear diff fluid? Any damage seeing it was a year ago?

    Freaking out..

Truck is a 2013 still under warranty. Can I still do it myself? Or will I be voiding the warranty by changing fluid myself? Btw truck has 20k miles.

Do they sell this as a complete kit? And do you still do it through the pop out in the bed?

No kits. Just a couple of easy to source parts. You don't have to go through the bed, you can come up behind the taillight.

Haven't checked out this thread for some time. Is the point of mounting behind the tail lights to get the breather cap higher? You could have mounted that several inches higher.

Eyeballing it on my truck the end of your hose is no higher than mine in the gas filler area. Since mine is forward of the rear axle, couldn't yours actually end up lower than mine -driving up angle out of water?

Edit: After thinking about it I guess that is just an easier location to do the work. I did it years ago but I do remember what a PITA it was working with one hand behind my fender. ;) If you have water high enough to reach either location -you have bigger problems to worry about!

How is it supposed to breath air behind something though?
