Been burning high octane shell for a couple of tanks.
Am going on 300 mile trip next weekend to visit good ol mom and dad.
300 each way. Hopefully w/new plugs and high octane fuel, catalytic converter
will burn out since it doesn't seem to be too clogged anyhow.

Anyway. got my emissions inspection today thanks to the spark plug anti-fouler
trick. Got right by NC emissions computers.
Here in NC you can't get your tag renewed until you pass an emissions test.
It's all tied together. They really have you by the nads.
We don't have to be hooked to the exhaust pipe, however.
The smog test on the exhaust would still show a bad cat.
All I needed was to make the computer think everything was great.
Anti fouler is the trick if this sounds like you.
I know cat is still going bad, but now have time to deal w/ problem.
Feed family or buy new cat?
    No brainer
Thanks to all for all the great info.
    Great website.

TacomaJeff: Which rear O2 sensor do you screw non fouler into? I have an 05 Taco and there are two rear O2 sensors, one on driver side and one on passenger? Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

I believe the code is specific to one side of the engine or the other. What code are you getting?

I think bank two is driver's side on these trucks. Hopefully someone else can confirm that for you.

Yep, here it is in the OP's original post. If your code is the same one he had, then you would be dealing with the driver's side.

ok i figured it out. Both of my front cats were bad so I did it on both sides and haven't got the code since. Thanks

    P0430 Bank 2 is driver's side.
Bank 2 is side of engine w/#2 cylinder, which is driver's side, or right side facing
    the vehicle.
    Pretty neat little trick.
If it doesn't come back on you know the cats are going bad.
    Glad it helped.

    Thread resurrection!!!!
So if I have both banks #1 and #2 throwing codes (P0420 and P0430) and I have cleaned MAF, replaced spark plugs, ran high test, and don't hear any exhaust leaks, should my next step be the spark fouler trick??? Both banks would mean both side cats and/or both side sensors are bad. On the other hand, since it's both banks every time, maybe it is more feasible that it would be something pre-exhaust (where it splits)

P0430 and P0420 codes are either upper exhaust manifold cats
Or 02 sensors. It will be cats that are part of the manifold. There
Is an 02 sensor before and after the cat. They are both before the exhaust junction
Coming from engine to the rear. Mine had no loss of power or
Anything associated with cat problems and was still the cat. I tried
Everything like you did. Anti fouler did the trick. They are 2 for $6.00.
Easy to try. You will need 2. One for each side. I would give it a try
Before you drive yourself crazy. Let me know how it goes.

Good info on the spark plug nonfouler! I picked up a set today as I've been having the P0430 error off and on for a while. I have a bluetooth ODBII reader and Torque app on my phone so normally I just clear it and forget about it. Maybe throw some Lucas fuel treatment in it when I remember, and it goes away for a few months. Same with my wife's Rav4. This time though it kept coming back each week. Luckily the last time was the afternoon AFTER my NYS inspection passed so I didn't need to do anything to make it pass.

The Lucas wasn't cutting it this go around so I was getting concerned I would have to start replacing the exhaust system. :( At least now I know most likely the $6 parts and a drill press with solve the issue for now. :D While there I got another can of Seafoam to pour into the vacuum line to clean things out. Guess we'll see if that does the trick.

Remember if the antifouler works for you
then chances are its the cat. If CEL returns,
then more than likely it's the upper O2 sensor.
    Happy motoring.

I haven't actually done the antifouler yet. Just put a second can of seafoam through the intake Monday, reset the code a couple more times, and so far it hasn't come back. It was coming back once a day or so before so I'm hoping it's fixed. I figure the antifoulers will be good in a pinch if I need to pass inspection next year.

Ive had the P0430 code of quite a while. I've replaced the Cat and both sensors on the Driverside? WTH! Just ran 1/2 can of Seafoam thru the brake booster line and have 1 can in fuel tank with 1/2 that burnt.

Just scanned the codes and cleared them.... so we will see.

I've been putting seafoam in the vacuum line for a while now, probably on my second or 3rd can doing a little bit at a time, and the rough idle is better. Smoother, and the P0430 went away for about a week so I going to run some more through. Hell, it's cheaper than a new cat and seems to be clearing out a blockage since the exhaust doesn't pulse anymore.

On the v6 don't use the brake vacuum hose for seafoam. I've read where the brake hose doesn't feed all cylinders. Your basically flooding I believe the #3 cylinder with seafoam.

There's a hose you can take off right on the throttle body. This will give all cylinders an equal dose as well as maximize the dispersion.

Thanks will run that other 1/2 can thru tomorrow. Heading to Bellingham WA tomorrow for a concert so that should get some mileage on her then hook up the OBDII again. Have to solve this before Feb when she needs to have Air Care done here in BC.

I'm stumped as I have already replaced the Cat (Dri side), Toyota part, and replaced both O2 Sensors (Denso - Toyota recommended) as well. Have not touched the passenger side.

Maybe try swapping sensors with the passenger side and see if the fault moves? I'm dealing with the same issue. It's weird for sure. There is a TSB for the 05/06 trucks for the front HO2 sensors, but having replaced yours already it's interesting the fault is still there. I ordered a new fuel pump and filter set up from URD, but it doesn't make sense that low fuel rail pressure would cause only one bank to be lean. It sucks throwing parts at ghost faults...

Also I believe (in the US at least) cats are under warranty until 80,000mi. Sadly I found this out at 96,000mi.

I had this same problem a year or so ago. Changed out the sensors still got the check engine light. Turns out I had a short in one of my wires under the dash.(my mechanic found it)

Well made it only 360kms after clearing the code before it came back on.

Any chance he showed you where the short was? Just checked the PCV and OMG what a sludgy mess. Still rattled just the same. Cleaned it but am going to replace it next run across town.

Re scanned and all the numbers/data are similar to the initial scan. Gonna take them in to a mechanic I know to see if he can read it.

I just don't get that Bank 1 is fine...

Mine has been a pain in the ass too! I thought maybe it was just a sensor, or short, but the exhaust tone sounded different, rough, like it was pulsing. So it seemed like a blockage. But I don't have $1000 or whatever a new exhaust costs just laying around. Seafoam seems to be helping it, but the damn code still comes up at random times! :frusty:

There seems to be no rhyme or reason to when it comes on. Sometimes it's off for a week, sometimes i clear it 3 times in the same day. Having a bluetooth OBDII reader for my phone helps!
