CB fuse box power

Hey everyone!

I gotta claim ignorance on this subject. I just ordered my Cobra 75 with all the needed accessories and antenna from Right Channel. I know how I will mount my antenna and route all the wires. My only question is powering the radio from the fuse box. What do I need to purchase to accomplish this? I don't want to connect it directly to the battery.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

 

You will need an "add a fuse". They should have them at Radio Shack. Direct wiring to the battery will give you the best perforance and is super easy.

 

or a mini fuse tap.

Thanks for the info and the pic! I think I'll just use a fuse tap, as I haven't added any fuses to my fuse box yet. There has to be an open slot. Will the fuse box top still close properly?

I dont want to run the wires directly to the battery, as I want to avoid any possibility of a fire hazard.

 

Run power and ground to the battery to prevent noise. Abs noise is so hard to get rid of

 

A fuse is required no more tha a foot away from the battery rated at what the cb is rated for

 

That's why I wanted to hook the power up to the fuse box. That would accomplish that if I used a mini fuse tap, correct?

 

Depends on the side of the fuse that has the power.with a tap you have to use a test light to find out which side is hot and which is not the tap will go on the not hot so it can be protected with that fuse. But ground it at the battery if anything else.

 

Ugh!!!!! I tried installing it tonight with the add a fuse, using the fuse block behind the coin tray. No power at all! Could it be from an improper ground? Or is it something else? I tried using a bolt behind the kick panel as the ground for the radio. HELP!!!

 

Look everybody has been telling you to run the wiring to the battery. Absolute best way to do it and it's super easy.

 

1. The wires wont reach. Way too short.
2. I don't want to punch a hole in the rubber gasket on the firewall to get them through.
3. I want the fire protection of using a fuse.

2. No need to punch a hole. Run them through the firewall behind the fuse box in the cab. I run my CB, HAM, PIAA Aux lights, and LF light switches through the same hole. Get a wire hanger, carefully thread it through the hole from the engine bay, use some electrical tape and tape the wire onto the hanger. Now using the hanger like a huge needle, pull the hanger back through the firewall and presto, wire is through the firewall.
3. So put an inline fuse, or add your own auxiliary fuse box. Thats what I did. I would rather fuck up an auxiliary fuse box than a stock one. The stock ones cost a whole hell of alot more.

 

Back to Autozone this morning it is then! What amp of a fuse did you buy for the inline fuse box? Thanks...

 

Your CB should have had an fuse with it unless you bought it used and the original owner cut it. What brand and model of CB do you have?

 

Cobra 75. Install complete and works great. Thanks for the info. You were right. Should've went from the battery from the get-go. I bought the extra wire, and an inline fuse adapter also.
