So I've been researching muffler types and can't seem to make up my mind on what to get. I have an 07 4.0 and want a little more sound but do not want to lose any hp. I want it to sound throaty but not ricey and not to loud in the cab. Also what size should the pipes in and out be? and what end should be offset or centered? Also what does "chopped after the axle mean? I see a lot of people run flowmaster 40 series and magnaflow 18".

I have a Dynomax UltraFlo, 2.5" in/out. Under hard acceleration it does sound kind of ricey, but there's not much you can do about that with a V6. But under normal acceleration it sounds good - nice deep rumble, louder than stock but not too loud. There is a bit of drone in the cabin but not bad. No noticeable difference in HP, MPG, etc. Centered or offset shouldn't matter too much, but mine is offset FWIW. I also cut the exhaust after the axle. The pipe goes up over the rear axle, back down and then turns to the side. I cut it after the down turn, just for looks, not for any performance reason. Didn't notice a difference in sound after doing that.

I have a Magnaflow as well. I've used Flowmaster on other vehicles and prefer the Magnaflow. Check my info at left for the part number.

Alright, I went to my local exhaust shop and when I got there they said they only had Flowmaster so I went with that, a Flowmaster 40 series. After having it on for a couple days I'm not super impressed but I think it's alright. The muffler is pretty quiet at idle, it has a little drone at about 40 mph, and you can really hear it when you get on the gas from 0-50mph. The biggest thing is I feel like it's not that responsive as far as stepping on the gas and hearing it, I guess I'm used to my old wrx's exhaust. But overall I'm happy with it just not as mind blowing as I thought it was going to be. I paid 180 installed.

I'm thinking the same thing. I like the deep sound but nothing crazy. A little cab noise wont bother me and when i hit it, i want some noise but not the rice burner sound. Really don't want to sacrifice any MPGs though. The Magnaflow 18 and Flowmaster 40 sound like the best bets. Installed and all i'd like to be no more than 250. Ideas? Am i on the right track?

Yup. I remember I got my Magnaflow for $80 and install with a chrome tip was less than $90 (local muffler shop) so you should do better than $250. Honestly, mine sounds great even over 40K miles later. I get questions about it pretty often.

Bought mine at hottexhaust.com. Used them on my '05 Altima, too.

Well, for $90 if it just sounds decent I will be happy to spend a lot less than planned. Magnaflow just hopped to the top of the list.

-ETA: What would be the proper Magnaflow 18 i need to check out? As i'm looking i've seen a couple different models.

Neither personally, but if you insist on bolt on it is one of your few options....

I would look to Aero Turbine, Dynomax, or Magnaflow for straight through style mufflers (my favorite personally)

If you want a glasspack style muffler, I would look into TRD or else URD's offerings

I just got a Dynamax Bullet installed and I freaking love the sound of it. It's extremely throaty sounding when taking off normally, but when stomped on it's not too much louder. Perfect for my liking. $135 installed
