:(Has anyone else had a problem with the air bag light? At about 50k my air bag light came on and the manual says take to dealer for service. Dealer says will cost at least $80 to diagnose problem. I am thinking this is not a wear item and should be taken care of free of charge.
    Thanks in advance,

same thing happened to me, turns out it was an airbag squib (airbag spiral cable) Search around you will find a lot of info here on the subject. My advice is take it to the dealer NOW ! ! ! ! with this light on your airbags will not deploy. I went in at 65,000 and was out of warranty, after making a fuss (which I never do) I was given a 50% discount due to my past experience with the dealership.

Short story, I would at least check it out . . . eat the 80 bucks and maybe the 500 dollar repair will still be under warranty, also, your safety is worth a few twenties

oh and check the connections under the seat . . . . . . maybe something knocked one lose ? I was told this could set off the SRS light

Take it to autozone to get the code read for free, before you go to the dealer and pay.

Just off the top of my head and having no access to the manual - doesn't the restraint/seatbelt system have a longer warranty period than the usual 3 years/ mileage?

:):)Just got back from dealer in Bloomington,IN. Great place to go for service. Almost 51k on truck and I am second owner and I do not have anything bad to say about them. They told me it would be $49 diagnostic fee but it would be waived if it was covered under warranty. Long story short it came back spiral cable bad and fixed under warranty and even gave me a rental car. This is what I think you should expect from Toyota. No hassle:):)

It is under the driver's side airbag.

nice, is there a way to check it yourself and change it out if it is bad? im not very knowledgable on the SRS system, but would rather like to avoid the dealer if my warranty wont cover it

DO NOT put your meter on a yellow wire. Yellow is for the SRS. The voltage from an Ohm meter can set off the airbag.

well my first plan is to see if it is covered under warranty....

and just because im new here doesn't mean im new to Tacomas or auto mechanics for that matter, not really sure how to take your last statement

a "noob" to the SRS system, yes, but troubleshooting i am no "noob", using a multimeter, i am no "noob" working on vehicles i am no "noob" give me a wiring diagram and a multimeter and i would figure it out, and now that i think about it i do have a wiring diagram of my entire truck, so this is where i will start if the dealer doesnt want to fix it under warranty

you are obviously a veteran on this site, i will not deny that, but please dont under estimate someone because they seem to be a "noob"

Disconnect battery, wait 15min, remove screws on back of steering wheel.
