Trans Flush ?'s

So I am due for the trans flush on my Tacoma, and was wondering if anyone has ever had it done at another place, other than the dealer? I have a local shop that performs this service on our trucks and it is a bit less expensive with this group. This is a great shop locally and has a wonderful rep for good honest work, is there anything I should be looking for before using them? Should I not chance it and have the dealership do it? I do not have a warranty, and would perfer to use this shop, but will not if I get the direction that I should not from others here. Any help would be great.. Thanks!!

 

Make damned sure they're using the correct WS fluid.

 

Yeah I knew the fluid was important, but I was just curious if others had any luck with outside services? I may still go with the Dealership though.

 

I would not take the chance. Just take it to the dealer. I was on the same boat as you. I ended up paying $180+ at the dealer but I had the piece of mind.

 

$180 would not hurt my feelings so much. They want $300 for it here! I feel that si a bit too high, I would have been fine with $250 even but $300 just sounds like robbery to me.

 

If you trust the local shop, I would have no problem with it, so long as they can assure you (and you believe them) that they will only be putting genuine Toyota WS fluid in the transmission. That should be in writing, on the estimate and on the receipt when it is finished and paid for.

 

There is a DIY on transmission oil change in the 2nd gen section, check it out. You'd save yourself a ton of cash. And flushing isn't all that hard either. Check out the DIY and if you feel you need it flushed, which if it's the 60k change I personally don't think you do, just buy a hand pump for the fluid bottle and pump through your trans cooler lines.

 

went thru this with a retro T-Bird with sealed trans like the Tacomas and no local shop would touch it said needed special tools etc to properly evacuate and replace the fluid. actually Tuffys said they would do it but having done my homework i quized them and after they looked it up on their computer they backed off and said they could not do it. i would call other dealers for price that seems a bit high but in the end would go with the dealed on this one.
