Why wouldn't you want your 3-leaf replaced by a 4-leaf for free?

 

Yes. I mentioned a few slaps on the bump stops while getting my free 5K oil change and checkup. They ordered the parts and had me set up with new leaf pack a few days later. To me, the truck rides a tad tighter and sits a tad higher. Search the forum for a few "complaints" about the rear leaf fix.

 

It's a pain in the ass. If you plan on getting a lift, just aal and call it a day.

 

It isn't a problem for everyone. My '05 needed it but my '10 didn't. Both have three leaves... only the '05 bottomed out with a load... the '10 does not. Better springs for sure on my '10. I am surprised that they are still using 'soft' 3 packs, when there are firm 3 packs?

 

Does your "firm" leaf pack happen to have the exact same part number as the "soft" ones?

I'm suspicious that there is only one set of 3 leaf springs installed by Toyota, and that while they may be suitable for your needs, they are not for some others. Therefore leading to the perception that some are soft and sone are not.

 

Here is a photo of the left side 2010 leaf spring that doesn't bottom (and on Memorial Day we had a super heavy load of two packed ice chests and gear and 3 adults going to Baja). Do yours that do bottom have the -K in the number?

 

Got my TSB a year and half ago so I don't have the part numbers around. I will let someone with a 2010 chime in to help us resolve this mystery.

 

I've loaded my '09 with up to about 500 pounds of appliances + driver/passenger + stuff in the cab and driven over rough country roads without bottoming out. Same thing with several hundred pounds of wood and yard waste in the bed.

I documented the apparent spring rates here, showing that the springs appear to have a rate of about 300 pounds per inch of suspension deflection (each).

 

On my '05 it was enough.. actually less weight would cause it to bottom-out. If I just had two adults in the back seat (and 2 up front), nothing in the bed, the truck (2005 DC) would bottom-out on pot holes.

The 2010 stock 3-pak springs I have do not allow the truck to bottom-out. I kept my Ride-Rites (air bags) off my 2005 in case I would need them on the new truck... so far, I don't.

 

It would be interersting if those who have 'soft' 3-pak springs (that allow it to bottom-out) would post their spring numbers... I have posted the 'better' 3-pak numbers photo to compare. I guess I got lucky with my 2010 Tacoma?

 

Why not? Isn't odd that I have a 3-pak that doesn't bottom-out, but others have ones that do? If their springs have a different part number, then that would explain a lot.

 

Yes it would, since people were saying the 2009 suspension was improved, and that's exactly what several of us with 2009+ vehicles have experienced.

 

I wondered that, which is why I did the controlled test to look at spring rates, finding 300#/in per side (600#/in overall).
