I would make sure the truck is on a level surface then pull the fill plug with a pan under the differential. Let the oil drain out until it stops. The oil will then be at the bottom of the fill hole, which is where you want it.

The amounts called out for the V6 4WD (1.1qt transfer case, 3.0qt rear diff, and 1.6qt front diff) are only "approximate" capacities according to the Chilton's manual. It says to add as necessary to bring to appropriate level which they say is at or near the bottom of the fill hole.

    ****
The below instructions (from the factory service manual) say to check that the oil level is "within" 5mm (0 to 0.20 in.) of the bottom of the filler plug opening. As I understand this it can be at the botton of the opening (zero) or up to 5mm (or 0.20 inch) below. It seems to me it would be alot easier to just fill till it starts to come out of the fill hole rather than trying to measure the "approximate" amount called out making sure the truck is on a level surface while doing so.

    INSPECT DIFFERENTIAL OIL
    (a) Stop the vehicle on a level place.
    (b) Remove the differential filler plug and gasket.
    (c) Check that the oil level is within 5mm (0 to 0.20 in.)
of the bottom of the filler plug opening.
    NOTICE:
    • Excessively large or small quantities of oil
    may cause problems.
    • After replacing the oil, drive the vehicle and
    check the oil level again.
    HINT:
If necessary, fill the rear differential carrier assembly
    with hypoid gear oil.
    Oil grade:
    Hypoid gear oil API GL-5
    Recommended viscosity:
    Above -18°C (0°F) SAE 90
    Below -18°C (0°F) SAE 80W or 80W-90
    Capacity:
    Differential carrier assembly front:
    1.45 to 1.55 litters
(1.54 to 1.64 US qts, 1.28 to 1.36 lmp. qts)
    Rear differential carrier assembly:
    2WD: 3.26 to 3.36 litters
(3.45 to 3.55 US qts, 2.87 to 2.95 lmp. qts)
    Pre, 4WD: 2.75 to 2.85 litters
(2.91 to 3.01 US qts, 2.42 to 2.50 lmp. qts)
    (d) Check for oil leakage if the oil level is low.
    (e) Install the differential filler plug and a new gasket.
    Torque: Front differential carrier assembly
    39 N*m (398 kgf*cm, 29 ft.*lbf)
    Rear differential carrier assembly
    49 N*m (500 kgf*cm, 36 ft.*lbf)[/QUOTE]

Talk about getting somebody (me) paranoid ... you, you, you bad bad people! :)
So I grabbed a couple beers, a 12ft long 2x6, a level & my tools. Found a perfectly level spot (took me about a beer to accomplish that part, lol). Then opened both fill plugs (front & rear). In the front, virtually nothing came out, a few drops really. In the rear, some drained, but not much either. I waited for like 20 minutes, finishing beer # 2, then put the plugs back in, wasting two more of these crush washers, you you bad bad bad people!!! :)

Ok, now I think I put 1.7qts in the front & 3.2qts in the rear. I KNOW the oil is at the bottom of the fill hole now on a LEVEL surface. I will leave it at that!

Hey, thanks for all the replies. You never stop learning.

Hey whipper, can you please clarify what you mean (just put an "X" behind the right answer):
    "You will find them."
    "You were fined by them."
    "You were fine then."

    LOL, just kidding. Of course.

I asked the below question yesterday evening in this thread here, but haven't received an answer. I have to drive the truck to work this afternoon ("If a man will not work he shall not eat!"), so I'm hoping for an answer before I do any damage to my truck. Any feedback, gents?

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
Offroad takes slightly less oil then Sr5 and TRD sport. Also it has more parts that are on the way, so you did very good.
    :D
Just a reminder. Check your fill and drain plugs after 100 miles to make sure they are torqued to spec.
    Otherwise you good

Should verify the truck is on level ground. If you are doing this on a driveway with a slant, that could be the reason.

Okay, cool. My owner's manual simply says that it holds 3.0 qts since it's a 4x4, but I understand that the locker takes up some room. Thanks for the heads-up!

Definitely done on level ground. I do have axle shims which rotate the axle a bit, but not much to speak of.
