Taco Generations Question.

Okay, I'm confused about Taco generations. I alway thought it went something like this;

1995.5 - 2000 1st
2001- 2004 2nd
2005 + 3rd

But from what I have read, this is incorrect. I've owned two Taco's now; a 1999 regular cab and my current vehicle - an 04. Big difference in appearences between the two.

Would one of you kind guru's please set me streight?

Shootin' from the hip here, but I don't think Toyota was calling their pickups Tacoma untill the millenium.

 

1995.5 until 2004 is considered first generation. All though the body styles have changed the trucks from 1995.5 to 2004 they are fairly similar under the sheet metal. 2005+ is second generation. There is talk of Toyota re-designing the Tacoma around 2013. That will be the third generation.

In 1995.5 they started calling their compact trucks Tacoma's.

 

My dad was going to get a Tacoma in October 1995 but didn't when the dealer told him that a rear bumper and tailgate would be extras added to the sticker price. I was there and remember that quite well. After my dad informed the dealer that that was the biggest jackassery he'd ever heard of he went and bought a ford ranger extended cab that came with a rear bumper and tailgate. It lasted 240K miles and cost less that a Tacoma single cab. He traded it in on a Tacoma in 2004.

If anyone wanted to know it had horrible electrical problems, killed it's manual tranny at 120k and was on the verge again, had no power and the drivers seat got welded back together by me a few times.

The only complaint anyone has about his 2004 tacoma is that it rides rougher than his ranger and has no power on the freeway (2.7l sr5 ext cab auto)

He's driven my 2008 Taco a few times and has thought about trading his pickup in on a new taco, but at 140k miles he just doesn't want to trade his pick-up in. It's not worn out yet. I mean if a Ford can go 240k miles a Toyota should make it to 300k no problem.

 

Yeah, I remember when tailgates were considered optional and more $$$. WTF!?! I'm glad that's gone! But the bumper?!?! I'll never understand that.
