    My truck has 285/70/17's

Would it be possible for me to re-gear my truck with this used 4.10?

Would I need anything else like an install kit or would I be able to just swap the gears?

Seems like most Tacoma people regear when going with taller tires, like 35s and end up with 4.88 since the cost (esp. labor) is rather high.

I previously ran 4.56 with 32" BFG MTs (another vehicle) and it was too tall -- except when offroad, of course. The little things got to me, like when the lunchbox locker and tall gears made starting and turning at low speeds an adventure on wet or slick surfaces :)

Anyway, IIRC, when I got my gears, I got the "master install kit". Depending on vendor and application, that's like the ring and pinion, pinion bearing, carrier bearing, crush sleeve, ring gear bolts, cover gasket, pinion nut, and even a little thing of loc tite.

I would also buy new if buying gears. The time (or labor) to set gears right is worth a little more for a new set.

My tacoma is new, barely through an oil change, so I know dick about swapping gears on them. Plus I only stood around and watch the guys who set mine. (A couple backyard drag racing types who wrench for extra cash.) So I wouldn't be much help

You will have to get a 4 banger third to use 4:10 gears.

Gas should go up slightly around town. And more torque.

Um I disagree respectfully, I got used gears with 136k miles on them and they have been nothing but perfect for what I needed. Installed maybe 6-8 months ago and nothing but great results with a satisfied end user!

:woot: for regearing and doing the right thing for your truck thats got bigger tires!

Well new gears are always preferred if you have the $$$ for them but I wouldn't be afraid to throw in a set of used gears, ya just have to know what to look for as far as burns & scoring, chipped, cracked, missing teeth etc; the chattering mentioned sounds more like a preload issue with the pinion & ring gear matching

im not saying you cant ever use used gears .im saying in a 2011 new style front clamshell you have to have brand new gears or the old axles with the gears still in them,to get the correct pattern.
