Extended Warranty or Not

my 2010 has 32K on it and was looking at a 7year 100K bumper to bumper for $1700.00

Is this a good deal and also is it something that should be bought?? I guess if something happens that is major it would pay for itself, just wondering what you guys think?

Thanks for any feedback

I have driven over 150,000 miles with 2 different tacomas.. I have never needed anything other than routine maintenance. If it was something else, maybe. But if it were me, I wouldn't do it.

Personally I wouldn't do it, but there's plenty that have and ended up needing it. Before you decide, read and re-read the fine print.

When I bought my '05 from a Used Car Dealer, I chose to get the extended warranty they offered. Saved me $5200 after 2 months of having it!

Not sure if he still does them, but its worth a shot. It also is in the canada forum, but by the looks of it he is US based.

You can get a Toyota 7yr/100K $0 deductible Platinum Warranty for $940 from Toyota of Greenfield. $1700 is a rip off.

x2
Troy Dietrich from Greenfield Toyota. His prices are hard to beat.
I bought one right before the 3/36 ran out from him for my 06 & yes have already used it. It was the first truck since my first toyota pickup in 1987 that I bought an extended for.

You have to ask yourself if you believe your truck will need $1000 worth of fixes before it reaches 100K....... I think Toyota has done a lot of research and this is a money maker for them. The small percentage that use them like them. The majority never gets their return from them.

You can do better

Just bought my tacoma. With a little research I found the warranty prices online from several locations including Greenfield. Showed it to the dealer during purchase and got the 7 year 100k platinum warranty for about $950. Pretty cheap insurance if you plan to keep the truck for a while.

I just bought my 2011 two weeks ago, and like we already know, Toyota makes a reliable truck, that's why we bought them. That said, after the go around with the salesman/ "I gotta talk to my manager about this offer" bullshit phase of the sale was over, I went in to the finance manager. Then he takes his best shot to sweeten the deal as well. Extended warranties are a real money maker for them. I didn't use this guy below, but I went in armed with the information and I got them to match the quote below for a 7/100K plan.
This is from another site, so I won't mention it by name, (pm me if you'd like to read all of the post it's from), but here's the contact information for another dealer that sells at about half the price you were quoted. (Troy at Greenfield was also mentioned in that thread, as it was here earlier.) Here's the info:

8 YEARS 100,000 MILES $1,014.00
8 YEAR 125,000 MILES $1,374.00

I worry less about mechanical failure than something going bad electronically, lots of computerized systems in our trucks that can be very expensive to replace. A plan purchased at the right price is peace of mind. (Also, should you sell or trade in before you've used up your coverage, the unused portion of the plan you choose is refundable.)

My extended warranty has already paid for itself. My truck has 62K miles and I just had the leaking front timing chain cover TSB done. It would of cost me over $600 parts and labor. I've had the blower motor fixed twice to the tune of $400. I paid $880 for the 6yr 100K mile warranty which runs out Dec 2012. Extended warranties are nothing more than an insurance policy.

Bought mine from Troy for under $900.

Chances are I won't need it, but that $900 or so insures that the truck will be fixed and on the road so I can get to work. If I had $6,000 in savings that I could use to buy a new engine, transmission, or other major components I wouldn't bother, but I don't.

Hate to resurrect a thread, but last post wasn't so long ago.

I almost never buy extended warranties. I made an exception for my 2004 Sequoia; I paid $875 at the dealer when I bought the vehicle. At 61K miles, the rack & pinion required replacement, and it was covered. I basically broke even on the repair.

I bought a certified used 2008 Tacoma in 2010, and I got the extended warranty for that vehicle, too, because it was used with 28K miles on it, and I had no idea how the previous owner had taken care of the truck. I paid $940 for the extended warranty, which covers the truck until it reaches 100K miles. Hopefully I won't need it. The dealer initially quoted me $2300 for that warranty.
