Stock intake vs. Aftermarket intake

What is the deal here.. Some people have been saying stock intake is better than or just as good as most aftermarket.
Saying it's already cold air and there's no power or mpg gains from aftermarkets anyways.

Obviously aftermarkets are going to be a 'straight shot' of air to the engine but what are the real other benefits of getting an aftermarket intake. (if any)

If you don't even get any power gains what's the point of getting a new one? Pay all that money just for sound? Anyone know?
