Taking Taco out tomorrow, got a question

So Im going out with my buddy tomorrow who has an 07 Tacoma 4x4 w/ lockers and he doesn't want to go alone. Even though I have a 2WD PreRunner he still would like to have me with him in case. Here is my question...

we are going to be riding around in an area with nothing but Red Clay and it will be raining most of tonight. I have some BFG A/T 285/70R17 and was wondering if airing them down from 34 to 15psi would be a good idea? any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

 

I could be wrong but I think red clay is slippery aye? If so, I wouldn't air down .. I would think you would want to bite, not float. Airing down helps when you want to float on a surface ie: Sand and deep snow, rocks for sidewall traction.

 

Yeah good point. I guess in my head I was thinking if I aired down the tires I would have more surface area of the tire on the ground and that would mean more traction, but after thinking about it, I guess it would make sense to have a stiffer tire to claw into the soft red clay. Guess I will update tomorrow with picks.

 

Btw. I have BFG at's and I do not recommend going through much mud with them. They will turn into slicks. Especially clay. No bueno

 

What he says. Keep your pressure where it is. With your tires you should be able to hold on to the trail.

 

Sounds good thanks for all the advice. I will post picks tomorrow and Im sure one of them will be my buddy pulling me out. We will be hitting up the trails at Eglin AFB next to Pensacola, FL if anyone knows that area. Its pretty awesome from what I saw today.
