Bought TRD pre runner, always had 4wd

I've owned 6 Tacoma's and run up on this '10 TRD pre runner last weekend and couldn't pass up the deal. One owner, 11k miles, GREAT condition. All my previous tacoma's were 4wd and of course this one isn't although it does have the locker in the rear which I would imagine is as good as an open (or base) 4wd tacoma (non TRD). I love the truck but having owned so many 4wd's I'm starting to doubt if I can "survive" with a 2wd truck. FYI, I traded an FX4 F150 for the pre runner. Anyone on here own the truck I have and have you ever needed the locking rear end and it GET you out of the situation you needed it to?

 

the locking rear is better than a normal 2wd (duh) but not as good as a 4wd. its kind of in the middle.

I don't offroad at all really unless its like a pasture or dirt road, I race/ride dirt bikes so on occasion I might be some where a little slick/muddy but not often.

 

I can't see anyway a locked 2WD pre-runner is better or even comparable to a 09+ 4WD.

 

Nice truck! I'd take an open diff 4x4 over a locked 4x2 though, the 4x4 helps pull you through whatever you're trying to get through. The locked rear end could defintely be helpful and could get you out of a lot of places an open diff 4x2 wouldn't be able to go but it's not a replacement for 4wd. That being said, there are a lot of people who have 4wd and don't really NEED it.

 

I've got an open differential'd Prerunner with no factory locker (going to add Powertrax though), and you would be suprised at the shit I've got through with my truck already. I did get it stuck once in a situation where 4wd would have got me out, but even with basically a one wheel drive truck, it has STILL done pretty good offroad.

 

I agree with this completely. I would say you did fine, and would venture to guess 2wd locked in the mud would be pretty damn fun

 

I drove a 2wd for 10 years in the worst winter conditions with zero problems.

It is true though...happened to me not to long ago, went through a ditch diagonally, and got front left and rear right tires off the ground. No traction with 2 axles where one with a locker would have gone right through

 

Eh possibly. But in certain off camber situations like that, as long as one wheel on the locked axle has traction your good. This was also very low speed, no chance for the back end to come around

Ya but this wasn't a hill, just a simple ditch hidden by tall grass. This was in a stock truck with the sway bar still on, no flex through stuff like that = opposite wheels off the ground = stuck. I still believe I would have made it through with just a rear locker, but we will never know

 

Not trying to thread jack but how are the TRD sport prerunner with mech LSD. Are they 1.5 wheel drive?

 

4wd over 2wd period.

 

When the time comes for tires I'll probably get some BFG AT's and hope for the best, I'll be fine though. A locked 2wd is more than enough for where I go.

 

Brandon you'll be fine. Unless your a die-hard offroader the PreRunner will get you anyplace you need. 4wd folks always think they're the best crop. Always makes me wonder how everyone survives in their 2wds. Threads like this tend to turn into cock fights.

i love blasting off at red lights in 3 feet of snow while everyone else takes 30 seconds to get up to speed.

alot easier to add a locker than 4wd

 

Probably because there aren't any really big mud holes at the local mall .
