You can't get a doublecab longbox TRD Offroad , and you can only get ATRAC in the Offroad model .

If the OP wants a longbox , it won't have ATRAC

    There are options.
IMHO Best option for offroading is to shift to 4 (not D) so truck has towing shift pattern.
If you dont like that pattern read FSM on how to override shift computer and use shifter to shift manually. For me shifting to 4 works best.

Fifth gear is already disabled in 4LO.

And about keeping it in 4HI during offroad, couldn't that cause the transmission oil to overheat due to higher amount of "slippage" into the torque converter?

The OP was asking about wheeling in in 4LO. The transmission doesn't upshift in 4LO range.

4LO limits your speed dramatically , I guess it depends what speed you are offroading at , as I said earlier I mostly limit my 4LO usage to crawling .

I don't think there is an issue with using 4HI as far as overheating the tranny

If you select 4th in 4LO , you're saying it starts in 4th and stays there ?

I might be wrong but I thought there's no upshifting. I thought while in 4LO there's no over drive (D)...the tranny is in 4th gear (weather you have the shifter in the D position or the 4 position. )

    Quote- OC-T...
If you select 4th in 4LO , you're saying it starts in 4th and stays there ?

Yes...unless you shift down into 3, 2, or 1 manually with the gear shift selector.

Maybe I'm reading the owners manual wrong. Under automatic transmission (5 speed) it says...
When the front drive control switch knob is in "L4" the driving pattern selector setting has no effect on gear shift timing.

    Intetesting .

I'm quite sure it upshifts and downshifts , but apparently you cannot force it to remain in a gear with the shift lever

ie : if you have it in 4th , it starts in 1st , shifts up when appropriate to 2nd etc .

It doesn't start in 4th because you have 4th selected

Are you saying your transmission shifts between gears automatically when your in 4LO?

I have 06 Db Cab 4x4 TRD Sport Long-bed automatic. I have always kept it in "D" while wheeling. I have put it in 4-LO to make it up a wet muddy hill a few times. Remember, Db Cab long-bed is only offered in automatic and the 06 only came with limited slip rear. No Locker! I must say that the limited slip has been an awesome set up. I know all these guys that have lockers and say "You'll never make it without a locker". That a bunch of BS! I have gone everywhere they have with the only exception of clearance issues because of the long wheel base. That and a few rocks that my front bumper would not clear.

I haven't had my Tacoma in 4LO that often, but it seems to me that it does not shift at all, like the manual states. It feels like it stays in 1st no matter the throttle/RPM/shifter position.

Interesting...I wasn't aware they changed the automatic transmissions between 07 and 010. Like mentioned earlier mine states right in the owners manual...
"When the front drive control switch knob is in L4 the driving pattern selector setting has no effect on gear shift timing."
While in 4LO my transmission neither up-shifts or down-shifts on it's own. On mine any gear selected (4,3,2, and L) stays locked in those gears when in low speed 4WD.

Mine has no mention of the same , it does however have a chart listing the allowable top speeds for downshifting while in 4LO
