F'd Up Painting My Grille....

I used adheasion promotor, but I guess I didnt sand enough because the primer didnt stick. It's only that one section. What the hell am I supposed to do now? Sand it all down and redo everything?

The actual paint is coming in tomorrow...

 

I already bout a $30 can of color matched paint. I just need to get the primer to stick.

 

Id say keep sanding...sand good and sand lots..

Not 100% sure..I just know a little about body work from my uncle...all i know is that if shits not sticken you need to sand more or clean the surface better before spraying...Hopefully somebody who has sucessfully done the paint job you are tryin to do will chime in.

 

Yeah, this is my first time ever doing anything like this. I guess i'll just keep sanding and have another go at it.

 

Sand more until the chrome is either gone or roughed up good or the paint will not stick.

I didn't think you could remove the chrome from these front grilles. I would sand it until its roughed up. What about laying down another layer of primer and seeing in that sticks?

 

primer will only fill scratches down to 180grit so dont sand rougher than that. if its not sticking in that area i'd sand it all down with 180 grit to a uniform level. make sure you clean it with dish soap and water. spray 2 coats of adheshion promoter. spray 3-4 coats of primer waiting 10 min between coats. after 30 min to an hour you should be ok to wet sand with 600 grit. clean area with water and a tac rag to get all the dirt and dust off. then paint....10 min between coats. when you are done wait at least 30 min and apply the clear coat. after 24hrs you can wet sand the clear coat with 1500-2000 grit. it will look scratched and scuffed but then you use a rubbing compound to shine it up and then a polish to really shine it nice. make sure its not humid outside or the clearcoat might have a cloudy look to it. i just painted a grill for my tacoma but I bought a $30 grille from parts geek. its in my profile pics. oh, and make sure you apply plenty of clear coat so if you choose to wet sand and get rid of the orange peel look you wont burn through all the clear coat to the base coat.

Well, I just got done sanding the shit out of it and washed it with dish soap. It has hardly any shine now. Gonna wipe it down with alcohol and hit it up with the AP and primer tomorrow, hopefully it works this time. If not, i'll just buy one of those $30 grilles beaver_scott mentioned.

 

use rubber gloves when wiping with alcohol and any other touching of the grille after...

I know you probably don't want to hear this but from my experience (building 4 or 5 of these) that paint will not adhere properly to that chrome finish whether you use adhesion promoter or not and whether it's scuffed up or not. I think on the last couple that I did I just tried to not sand through the original paint, just scuffed it up a bit. As far as I know they're all still holding up well. Best of luck!

i painted my chrome grille too. i just sanded it, primed, then semi gloss black. been holding up for awhile..no problems.

 

It works just fine. Take your time, follow the steps and you'll be good to go.

 

Ur trucks fairly new. Why don't u have it professionally done. I never try painting anything bc it always looks shitty

 

Put some pics up of the color match when you're done. I tried 3 different brands trying to color match the superwhite and I couldn't find one that was close enough for me. I ended up buying a color match grille from the dealer.
