Definitely 285's! I don't even have a lift yet and I like my 285's, so I can imagine on a 3 inch lift you need at least 285's.

285's fill the gap in the wheel well from the lift. I get people telling me all the time they cant tell that my truck has a lift until I park next to a stock Tacoma.

I think 265's look good if you have a wider stance. If you keep the stock wheels with 265's it seems to look to narrow with a 3" lift.

285's hands down. I had to do almost zero cutting, and they fill the wheel wells. I know I'd regret it if I'd gotten 265's. Just too small for that lift IMO

    same here.
IMO 285 are too risky about rubbing and whatnot. Plus tire cost and MPG. 265 or 275/70

if you have stock wheels you have to get 265s, if you get 285s on stock wheels you'll rub the UCA even with aftermarket/custom UCAs... you need the backspacing of aftermarket wheels or wheel spacers to fit 285s, lift or not.

I think you should also pay attention to the height of the tire, since i have a 3 inch lift with stock wheels (i want to keep my stock wheels, and i refuse to use wheel spacers) my stock tire size is 265-70-16 and i'm going to get 265-75-16. Basically adds one inch to the height of the tire to fill in that gap from the lift. I won't have a wider stance but the tire will be bigger and I will not have any rubbing. I really want 285-75-16s though!

For me, it depends on what the lift is used for. If I understand the suspension geometry correctly, three inches of lift raises the body, but not the differentials. They stay the same height above the ground. What the lift does is allow you to put bigger tires on which in turn, raises the differentials, but only half of the difference between to the two tire diameters.

In practice, I put the equivalent of a two inch lift on my truck and added 265/75-16 tires (31.6" diameter) to my truck (up from 265/70-16 (or 30.6")). The front differential went up by half an inch (didn't measure the rear). When I go to a 33" tire, I expect I'll get another ~2/3" on the differentials.

don't mean to jack this thread, I'm also interested in changing out tire so I was reading about everyone OP, but I'm hearing alot of people saying 285's but no mention of series? This would make a difference as well, wouldn't it? I just bought a 3' lift and will get new tires/rims sometime down the road so there is alot of good info here but, like many, want to hear about issues others have had to save us the trouble. Thanks for all the great input. I'm thinking about 285/70/R16.
