I have a question related to the two TRD CAIs that there have been. As I understand it, there were two editions of this part.

Tell me if the below is true:

    2rgf5er_f9a4468716d0a2cf57f5e0c6d71803a6de0ebe22.jpg

^This is the old version, which was not street legal, and which you can't get anymore. The old part number is PTR05-35061.

    2jfc9ec_49a2e6096ae70f7626c620379f85adb79d401280.jpg

^This is the new version, which is street legal and is covered by your warranty. This version uses a flat square/rectangular TRD air filter (part number PTR43-00083), not the conical style found on the old version. The new version is part # PTR03-35090.

Generally, the old version was regarded to perhaps provide a small (at best) performance gain, but the new one is sound/aesthetics only. Neither should be expected to provide any increase in power or MPG.

The old part number and the new part number would both work for any Tacoma, 05+

    Are the above statements true?

Thanks Chris. I had a hard time finding out online which was old and which was new, and how to identify which I would be getting if I ordered one, so I thought I would make a thread that anyone could search up if they were in the same position.

Updated OP with additional info and part numbers.

If anyone knows the part number of the old version, or that of the replacement filter, post it up!

I beleive URD did some testing on the two and found that the original version made better performance numbers.

The afe Stage 2 is basically the same CAI as the original TRD unit.

AFE Stage 2 Si is the same as the TRD original, it's different than the Stage 2.

Was thinking about buying a TRD CAI but this thread combined with this writeup for a Tundra have made me completely lose interest in a CAI since there's no/little performance gained.

Thread revival- does anyone know the filter details of the Original TRD PTR05-35061 intake, (I believe the conical filter to be OEM part number PTR05-35066)? Did the stock intake come with an oiled, or dry conical filter from AFE?

TRD CAI came with an oiled conical filter. It had a TRD logo embossed on the end and was red. I replaced it with an AFE Pro dry filter with the same dimensions. Much easier to clean and no messing with the oil.

Stock intake came with a regular paper filter, rectangular.

I'm necro-ing this thread one more time because the information was very hard to come by, and this thread has the most related info in it, and folks looking for this will end up here (as I did). Toyota discontinued the first edition of the cold air intake (CAI) pictured atop (PTR05-35061). Sadly, they just left us hanging when we want to replace the air filter (PTR05-35066), which they seemingly deliberately had K&N manufacture in a non-standard 5-1/2" flange diameter (presumably to force us to buy them from Toyota).

Indeed, aFe POWER is still building the original CAI, minus the TRD stickers. They call it "Magnum FORCE Stage-2 Si Cold Air Intake System" (the "Si" is necessary). aFe's part number is 54-81162.

Now for the replacement oiled conical air filter: aFe's "Magnum FLOW Pro 5R Air Filter" - Part Number: 24-91021 (You need the part number, as that name applies to many different filters)
    Dimensions are: 5-1/2 F x 7 B x 5-1/2 T (Inv) x 6 H in (IM)
Note: F = flange, B = base, T = top, H = Height, in = inches, Inv = inverted (meaning it has an indented cone, which the original custom red K&N filter didn't have), and I don't know what IM means.

The 5-1/2" flange diameter is non-standard. If it were 6", you'd be able to use the very common (and half-the-price) K&N RU-1048 filter. But be glad you can get the filter at all, No Thanks to Toyota. K&N does indeed direct-market one 5-1/2" flanged filter, but it is 8" tall, which will not fit in this CAI box.

I wish there were class action lawsuits for what Toyota did here: Deliberately make the expendable supply items non-standard so you cannot buy them elsewhere, then discontinue it and fail to support customers that still need those parts. They seem to have learned this trick from Apple, bricking phones & iPads, but that's a subject for another forum.

    Good luck, fellow Taco owners!
