Water crossing - max depth

Hey guys, I just got a new 2011 taco with the TRD O/R package. This hurricane coming close to us here in Florida has me wondering: how deep of water is it safe to drive the taco in? Obviously I'm talking about slow cautious driving, not balls to the wall see if you can hydroplane over it. I see the intake goes to the passenger fender, but I can't tell where it actually draws the air from.

Simple searches didn't find any specific answers.

 

meh i have had water to the top of my tires. i wouldnt go higher than the top of my fender. i wouldnt go that high even... unless it was a must need.. (like to get out of a hurricane)

hurry and over night a snorkel and do the diff breather mod

 

Fj Cruiser water fording depth (per toyota) is 27.5 inches. seeing as how the FJ and Tacoma are pretty similar with intake and drivetrain i would say that is a good starting point. I would definitely do the scuba mod as soon as possible.

I would not suggest much higher than your door
Sills as well.

If you are worried about the hurricane being where you are, best leave before you even have to worry about driving through water.

Nah! I was a little worried about not doing the diff breather mod though.

 

I've pushed water halfway up the bumper for about 150 feet then backed out of it without any major problems. Anything over the hubs will contribute to premature wheel bearing failure though.

 

I made it up to the Tacoma badge on the door.I think it was 37" high??? I did it first with windows closed and was fine. Coming back with windows open,I killed the carpets. Not sure with windows closed kept pressure in cab. I had to replace starter 3 days later.

 

I've been In water up to my badges with no problem at all just do the diff breather mod and take it easy through the water

 

Don't forget the Tranny breather.... 3/4 way up the tires max for a short burst is about all I would feel good about.

General rule of thumb is water no deeper than half way up your tire. Start getting higher and the water starts pushing against your frame and body, which creates a substantial amount of force. Also, fording can be very dangerous if the water is flowing or if you do not know what is in front of you, you could get hung up and be SOL.

People go through deep water all the time, but any sensible off-roading manual or someone who has taught newbies how to 4 wheel (I've done that more times than I care to count) will say the same thing.

 

You need the TRD CAI and leet custom skewp snorkel. (DING!)

(everytime you make a skewp joke, a taco gets his wings)

bumper's a safe bet....pulleys and alternator may have issues in the long run after many crossings but you'll make it through fine...
