I'm in the market for a used Tacoma, 2005-2007 but I am concerned that the registration might be more than I care to pay. The information I read about registration prices in California varies from a few extra dollars ($24) to several hundred extra.

Anybody care to share your yearly fees?

Thanks for showing me your googling skills and yes I have already done that for the past 2 hours, but unless you have the actual vin you can't get the correct info. Even if you do have a used car vin in mind, if the registration is paid up already for the year then you won't see a value listed to know what you have to pay the following year. The dmv website is incredibly confusing, because it doesn't tell you what fees you actually must pay, just a list of stuff that may or may not apply.

if you are buying used from a private seller, maybe you can ask that seller to write down on the Pink slip that the truck was a gift to you from a family (uncle or aunt if the last name isn't the same) or you only paid $500 for it. i did that with my car when i was 18, i asked the seller to put on the pink slip that i only paid him a few hundred bucks but in reality i paid him the asked amount, my registration fees were $68.

Lousy advice. What you're suggesting constitutes fraud, which is a felony. Not only that. but you've admitted in an open forum, of you own free will, that you have in fact committed a felony yourself.

Kid, I gotta tell ya'....you just ain't too bright.

ehh oh well. that car is long gone. if the OP needs to cut corners to make ends meet then he will do it, if not then he wont have this awesome ass truck.

people commit about 3 felonies a day. and that was one i guess i committed back then unwittingly.
Boston civil-liberties lawyer Harvey Silverglate calls his new book "Three Felonies a Day," referring to the number of crimes he estimates the average American now unwittingly commits because of vague laws. New technology adds its own complexity, making innocent activity potentially criminal.

When I purchased a used 2008 earlier this year, the total registration fees were ~$460. That includes title transfer and all that other happy garbage. IIRC, my 2006 PreRunner was running in the $270 range.

Actually the state trying to collect sales tax on a private party transaction is fraud but that is for another thread.

The OP was asking about registration, not taxes, anyway. Registration is based on vehicle value, not what you paid for it. This can be calculated on the DMV website

He is right. Lower sale price would lead to less first-time payment to DMV (used sales tax + reg). OP wants to know the reg fees.

    lmgtfy is always fun :)
