Hey all, long time reader. First time poster. (haha) I have a 2010 Tacoma, and I found a used topper from a 1999 Tacoma. Will the difference in styles allow it to fit?

I don't think so, but I'm not positive if there can be any modification to make it fit. I am selling an ARE topper for a double cab short bed off a 2006, and a lot of people have asked me if it will fit their 2004's and I tell them to double check, but I don't think it would

Nope. 2nd generation (2005+) is wider.

There is also no easy way to mount the older topper onto the newer truck. The newer truck has everything mounted with the bed rail system.

I wouldn't have thought it was doable, but someone here posted pics of a 1st gen shell on a 2nd gen Tacoma and it didn't look that bad.

I don't remember who posted the pics, but maybe someone will post them again.

    I found it...

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/140559-pics-1st-gen-shell-2nd-gen-dc-short-bed.html

But as the OP in that thread states, it's by no means a tight fit & by later in the thread, he's looking for a 2nd gen cap. It's barely on the rails for one. And there would water leaks everywhere. Plus it depends on the cap .. if it had skirted sides (designed to go over the bed sides) then it would definitely not work, because those would be on top of the rails, and they definitely aren't designed to hold weight ... just keep water out and give a cleaner look.
