New shocks needed with 3 inch leaf pack?

In the rear I have a 3 inch all pro leaf pack and heard somewhere that I NEEDED new shocks for the back? Do i need extended shocks? Is this true? I already have the brake lines.

What happens if I don't get new and/or longer shocks?

Or is this just a myth?

 

You're going to need new shocks.

Stock shocks are meant for stock height, so if you stay with them you'll have stock travel on a 3" lift....so your rear will not flex at all.

That is, if the shocks can even extend to handle the lift in the first place. You'll have them maxed out all the time, which will eventually break them

Grab some 5150's and be on your way.

 

i would think you need them, when i ordered my ome dakar leafs from toytec, the had the extended length billys with them. not sure what the negative would be if you dont get the extended length, however if toytec or any other shop recommends them i would just get them. the ome dakar was only 2.5 in. lift. I would just get them and do it right.

 

Are all 5150's all the same length or do I need special length ones?

And as for my current stock shock rear end, say if I flexed.. Could my shock possibly pull out / pull apart?

 

IIRC, there's 10 and 12 inch shocks, but try give DSM a call for the proper length. both should work though


if you lift the back and keep stock shocks, your shocks will be the limiters of travel. so say your leaf pack can flex 10", but your shocks can only handle 6, you're going to have one wheel in the air instead of an articulating rear suspension. I haven't seen a shock being pulled out, but eventually maxing out the shock all the time will lead to damage

I have 5100's in the rear with 2.5in DAKAR leafs. Was it a mistake not getting 5150s?

With our 3" springs, we recommend at least a 9-10" travel shock. However, be careful of the collasped lengths since too long of a body can limit travel as well.

Also, I wouldn't recommend the 5150s since although they are a 10" travel, you have to run an eye to stem converter that adds another 1", making them too long.

We just got in the new 5160 Bilsteins, similar to those pictured here:



They make them specific for the 05+ Tacomas valving and mounting wise. They give about 9 3/8" of travel with a short body. They retail for $189/ea.
