Is cold/ cool air intake worth it?

I was going to buy a K&N filter and started searching and discovered that a lot of you have cai systems. These are for my 2.7:

So anyway, is cai going to save on gas or get more hp compared to a plain K&N filter?

 

No saving on gas.

 

Not worth it. Ended up taking mine off last week because it was over oiled and was causing some problems with the MAF sensor

My mileage actually decreased. For the newer trucks i think its best to leave the engines alone to an extent.

the stock intake is a cold air intake since it gets the air from the same place the aftermarket ones do...

the drop in will give you the same airflow with the same cold air as the whole intake. save money buy good drop in...

 

Good thing I made this thread because all of the reviews on those parts that I saw were saying 1-2 mpg improvement and some were talking hp as well.

So is the K&N a good idea, or should I go with the afe dry one?

 

You get cooler air with the intake that comes stock. These intakes actually decrease performance or leave it the same. They are basically just a wallet diminishing mod.

Get the aFe drop in. Lubricating the K&N gets tiresome.

Yes. It is just as cleanable as the K&N, but you don't have to lubricate it and run less risk of damaging sensors.

BTW. I have a K&N and hate lubricating it. That is why i'm recommending the aFe.

 

id go afe dry... k&n have been known to have oil get into the maf like stated above...

 

Yeah I have one on my corolla. I cleaned it for the first time the other day. It isn't too bad, but I guess the maf sensor is an issue with the oiling. Also I read that the aFe has less resistance so I think I will pick one up.

 

I had the wet drop in K&N on my 2005 PreRunner 2.7 engine.

Never had any problems. I didn't notice any gains in anything (MPG or Power)
What little HP gains one would give you'll never notice..
You'll get better MPG by changing driving habits more than any intake/filter will help. Only thing I gained was the ability to reuse the filter every 15,000 miles. Not even my factory Toyota filter looked very dirty even with 17,500 miles.

For what it's worth, I now have a 2007 Toyota and I don't feel the need for another K&N. Plus they are a pain to clean and oil PROPERLY. Most people over oil them and put them in still wet with water.

 

I have and afe dry pro drop in. I used to have an afe cold air intake, but i sold it, with my DT headers. If you want to increase HP, and have a loud wide open throttle, then get it. but as you add hp it takes away from your mpg. You'd be better off dropping a lot of money on the apex1 it think it's called, or the controller from URD to make the engine run less rich.

 

CAI's sound nice but that's it. These companies claim to increase HP and MPG but fewer still have independent studies to prove it, no dyno results. I doubt they dyno every single make and model they make.

 

I had one on my last car, traded it in for my truck, but I could deffently tell a difference in acceleration, So i would have to say I gained HP but couldnn't prove it. I had to take it off cuz it wasn't an K&n so I didn't have the CARB sticker on it, drove it for a couple days till I could get the ticket taken care of and put it back on. Not sure what one would do for our trucks but I got to believe it would help if it did for my other car

 

I have a functional cai... but it is a snorkel.
