I check mine before it's been driven that day. Seems to be no problem then. If I am on a trip and feel the need to check it at a gas station, that's when it's hard to read.

Ok fine, don't be the guinea pig for the dip.... You could heat shrink it, make it kind of long and it should be able to withstand the heat, and rubber should take oil fine as it is a petroleum product. You could also sand it and paint it with an engine paint as it should handle heat and oil. To see how well it will work before making it permanent clean the dipstick very good to remove the oil residue, put masking tape on the end, then paint the masking tape. DO NOT leave this on for long as it will eventually fall off and can block the oil pickup.

    If it's really, really bad.

    -Check oil level with dipstick.

    -Hold dipstick flat and level.

-Run thumb slowly over the bottom of dipstick.

-Should see oil buildup between thumb and stick as you move thumb across the end of the dipstick.

Ha ha. I got a funny visual aid on my oil level check last night. I was at the gas station and it was already dark, I was reinserting my dipstick. Suddenly, there's a spark, a flash, and the end of the dipstick BURSTS INTO FLAME illuminating the re-insertion point!:eek::eek:

    WTF???

So I pulled it out and smothered the flame (think "candle") with the rag I used to wipe the dipstick down. How the hell did that happen??

Turns out my positive battery terminal won't hold it's plastic cover in place because of all the extra wires and fat winch cable coming off of it. So as I was reinserting the dipstick, it touched the positive terminal and grounded against the insertion tube completing the circuit, creating a spark and igniting the oil on the dipstick.

Just a little something to keep an eye out for if your positive terminal is uncovered....

    If you're a little over-filled or a little under-filled... It's fine.
