Who's fault....UPS/Shipper?

    True, but if the box shows up looking like it did for the OP, I find it hard to believe UPS accepted the package in that condition regardless of the packing inside. That box was trashed on the outside!

    I agree that they didnt accept it like that.I would not even have left that box at a customers house looking like that.I would have took it back to my building and had a clerk check for damage and repack if all was ok.

    A 142lb box is surely to get thrashed by UPS. There's no question about that. Not only would I have used at least 1/2 inch cardboard for that, but I would also have reinforced the box with wood and thick foam. UPS will reject a lot of damaged package claims because a lot of people will just "go away" if their claim is rejected. If you don't go away they just might pay you to make you go away. The important thing is to overpack your boxes when you ship with any carrier. It will save you from a lot of headaches down the road.
