    When I do an oil change on my truck I usually buy the 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 from Wal Mart. I know the engines capacity is 5.5 quarts but I usually forget to by an extra quart and besides, after I dump in the oil an run the engine to operating temp., the dipstick reads at least halfway between the two dots anyways. It doesn't burn oil and reads almost exactly the same at the next oil change. Am I hurting my engine by not filling it to maximum capacity?

    Anyhoo, you should be fine. Like others said, more likely to damage it overfilling the oil. So long as you're above the 'min' line, you're fine.

    Less oil is usually not good. Hot roads has added bigger oil pans just to hold more oil.
    More oil running on a bigger size oil pan equals cooler running temperatures.

    Running more oil then required is known to be much worse then running less oil. Running half quart lower that the maximum the oil pan can take is not harmful. Even if your assumption of hotter temps was accurate in a non-high performance motor it would be small.
