Carbon Fiber Skid Plate

I am going to mold my factory 2011 TRD off-road skid plate and lay it up in Carbon Fiber. Would any of you be interested in one? They would probably go for like $300-400. I will gladly make more if all goes well with mine. And I will post pictures up and such

 

Carbon fiber is extremely strong and all... But for taking rock beatings I'm not too sure how well it would hold up?..

Or is this just for looks.........

That TRD skid plate can't take much abuse anyways. Seems like a pretty expensive looks upgrade in a spot where it could get really mangled. But have fun!!!!

 

It would look "cool," but carbon fiber has tension strength, not against punctures.

Yeah, I got my truck to tow and to get me to and from work in the snow. I wouldn't take a brand new truck off-road where its gonna get beat up by rocks. So really, it is just for looks and lose a couple pounds, not that it really matters. And I have a ton of extra carbon fabric so it something to do to pass the time

And, a carbon skid plate could to pretty well. Its strength to weight ratio is really high, so if I made a really thick one and got the weight up, it would do pretty well. Also depends on how you lay the fabric, if your laying carbon in one direction, its only strong in one direction. Alternating the patterns multiplies strength alot.

 

It would be good for "mall crawlers" who want to have a tuner look to their trucks.

The best way to do it is to alternate layers of carbon fiber and kevlar. then you get the tensile strength of carbon fiber and the abrasion resistance of kevlar. That's the way we do them on our mini baja car at school.

I am still not sold on carbon fiber, coming from a BMW there are some guys who were obsessed with it, I think too much of it can be over kill.

Also agree, I don't see it being to functional, although it would look cool if done properly.
