TRD Sport or TRD Offroad

I plan on buying a newer tacoma and i want to get a tacoma trd 4x4 access cab but should i get the sport or offroad

 

do you want a locking rear differential?

 

the trd offroad is more for offroad obviously. i dont have a second gen, so i cant get specific, but i know the non trd version of my truck doesnt have a rear locker. worthless offroad pretty much unless you lt

Well it just depends on what you're planning to do with the truck...

 

you dont need a locker to off road, i find it is only really usefull for rock crawling other than that having 4x4 is fine

 

it's a matter of perspective...
I've used it many times, not only for rock crawling.

 

Do you really want chrome?

 

subjective. obviously you dont physically require it. but when in deep mud or sand, mine always prevails over those who dont have one

 

I may be wrong but I think in the case of the 1st gens it was either you get the TRD which came with a locker or you had an open diff. On Sports or any of the newer 2nd gens you get an LSD or ALSD, which definitely help traction wise over an open diff. If you're wanting to do serious off roading with an essentially stock truck, then go with the Off Road. The sport will still be more capable than many stock trucks off road, but also has a bit nicer on-road handling and (IMO) looks much better. It's just up to what you really want/need.

x3, u can then get a long bed, cuz isnt that u cant get the 2nd gens in trd offroad with a long bed or is it just 4x4 i dont have one so i really wouldnt know. beeteedub, my taco WITH A LOCKER had to pull out some drunk ass kid that ran into a pole tonight, hi silverado was stuck on the pole with his radiator basically eating it, and his truck was also hung up on the frame in the midsection on a pole too. tried it w/o the locker, no go. fliped it on, aired down a pinch, success

 

There is no real choice here. Either you want your truck to feel like a truck (Off Road pkg) or you want it to feel like a Camry (Sport pkg) fairly simple.decision really. Plus you get a locker and you dont have stare at that goofy scoop thing everyday. No brainer.....

 

well if you're going for 09-11 in addition to the locker you will also get a-trac with the offroad. The whole idea of getting a sport and adding a locker later can work both ways. You could get an offroad and add a hood scoop and color-matched grill and it would probably cost much less.

Also, I don't know if you've decided on a transmission but I have owned both manual and autos and prefer the autos for offroading. On the trail runs i've gone on the manuals seem to struggle more also.

Sport TRD is a 'looks' package... If you like a 'Sport' look (color matched trim and a fake hood scoop). It is very popular with the kids and Toyota sells a LOT of the Sports!

Off Road TRD is a traction package... the extra money of a TRD here goes to things that improve the trucks drivability, and you don't need to spend more for after market aids. The Rear Locker was great and even more traction comes from the A-TRAC (front and rear traction, like lockers). You get both with the Off Road 2009 +.

The Sport Tacoma had a limited slip differential only to the 2008 model. There was no Sport before 2005. TRDs back then were only Off Roads.

ALL TACOMAS from 2009 + have TRAC (H2 and H4) and AUTO LSD (H2) limited slip. Only the 4WD OFF ROAD has limited slip in Low Range, unless you do a mod. to get TRAC to work in L4.

A-TRAC (Off Road 4WDs only) has a hydraulic brake booster that creates the locker-like no slip traction control on all 4 wheels.

 

Some of these responses are so friggin comical. This website is a gold mine of information, but based on a couple of the answers here I really question some of you guys' ability to give a reasonable and/or responsible answer.
