Anyone ever run an electric smoker off your truck?

Going camping this weekend and was planning on bringing the smoker and doing a pork shoulder. We couldn't get a site with electricity so was toying with the idea of doing it using the adapter in the truckbed. It'd probably need to run for 10 hours which is probably too long but was just wondering if anyone's ever tried. We'll have another truck there in case I need a jump

What is the power rating on the smoker??

 

I don't actually have the smoker yet so I don't know the specs. I won it at work and I'm picking it up on the way home. It's a little Brinkman cylinder smoker, about waist high. I think I'll just leave it at home. Maybe bring my small offset smoker instead.

I don't know anything about smokers, but it sounds like they draw a lot of current. If you figure out the current draw, it may be possible, but you'll most likely have to start the truck a few times to keep your batter from dying, if you had a deep cycle battery too that would help a lot.

 

Anything that heats up will have a big amp. draw.... More than a stock inverter can handle. My guess would be needing around a 2000 watt+ inverter...

 

I don't think you would be able to run a smoker off the truck. I had a hard time making coffee with a 4 cup coffee maker and the heating element in that is much smaller than a smoker. When I take smoker camping I take a propane smoker with me.

 

If your bringing the ELECTRIC SMOKER to camping...don't forget the FLAT SCREEN TV too....LOL

Generally this is true, but when I looked at the rating of my wifes crock pot (slow cooker) it was only like 220 W. I was in shock. I guess being that its a lower temp, for longer cooking time ti doesn't need to draw that much.

I would assume a smoker is the same way. I say the OP has a good chance of pulling this off. Just start the truck every hour.


EDIT: Just looked at some electric smokers. Most draw about 1200W, which is beyond what the bed outlet can deliver. I say switch over to Ribs and a slow cooker and go for it!

 

Just run it without the electric heating element. Use charcoal instead of the lava rocks. If it's like my smoker the only difference is the electric heating element with lava rocks and the lack of a charcoal pan. Use aluminum foil at the base for the charcoal.

 

TRD inverter is 100 watt running 400watt off max amps is maybe 3.5 amps, better to just take a wood smoker and a 32" led tv

Thanks for all the input. I left the smoker at home, took the offset smoker but just ended up using it as a grill. I was thinking the electric smoker would be nice because I could just turn it on and not have to worry about adjustments. I didn't want to take the boat and do some fishing and have to worry about coming back and messing with the temperature or adding wood or whatever. But yeah, I wasn't all that impressed with the TRD inverter. I tried using it to make coffee and I had to keep resetting it because it would turn off. No bueno

Yeah, this is good. With tailgate season approaching, it would be nice to cook while tailgating. But I'd need to have the all the time on mod done for the power inverter. It is not good to cook while others are breathing in exhaust. LOL. They'll be getting sleepy

 

There is virtually no chance that the smoker will work with the Taco. The battery drain will be much quicker than an hour and the heating element won't heat enough to burn the wood chips.

There may be no other appliance that draws more current from an outlet than a smoker. Pure current.

Good idea leaving it at home but a great thought. Have you ever tried cold smoking? I have read about it but never tried it. You build the fire a few feet away and route the smoke to the meat. It takes longer but if you like that smokey taste, it is perfect. It works really well with salmon and other fish.

 

Whats up guys, Future tacoma owner. I was looking into the TRD's and one reason was because of the outlet in the bed. Would it be a big deal to upgrade the inverter so you can better use of the outlet?
