It happens with my truck too but it finds the right temp as I start driving. That's normal.

Going to give this fix a shot... Piercy Toyota just quoted me $1200 to fix this. Seems like this should be a recalled item not a 36 month / 36k warranty item.

I was going to follow the advice found here to fix the temp/compass on my 2005 Tacoma but when I took the console off, the 510 chip was missing. I looked everywhere with no luck. Does anyone know where to get another 510 resistor?

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
This fix is EXACTLY what I needed. I didn't read the entire thread, so maybe this was already mentioned: if you lose track of that metal clip the holds the overhead piece up (like I did), check the headliner real good. Mine ended up way over on the passenger side of the headliner. A 90 degree twist on the visor "clip" pops it loose so there is enough room to reach in there and grab the clip.

Well I took it apart and the resisters looked good and soldered and weren't loose along with anything else so I decided to go ahead and resolder the 510's anyway as long as it was apart as I figured I had nothing to lose. Plugged it back in before I put it all together and turned on the power(key)...nothing, bummer, oh well put it back together and hit the on/off button not knowing what it was(never used it) and presto...magic display!! Thanks very much for the info and help, now just have to fabricate a small catch for the rear window slider latch as the old one was glued in to the slider frame and is gone and of course you have to buy the whole slider window for 700.00 to fix it...nothing that can't done with some small aluminum channel and a dremel tool eh. Thanks again. -b-

my console broke monday. I was checking this thread that same day cause I know TacomaWorld has tons of info. Borrowed the soldering iron from my uncle and tried it for the 1st time. I've never soldered before. I think removing the console is the hardest part. Then I checked Youtube on videos of how to solder. And bit the bullet to try it cause I figured its broken either way and there is no way in hell I paying close to $1000 for a compass and temp. I'll just buy a compass ball and stick a temp sticker on my window before I let toyota rip me off. In the end, I plugged everything back in, and prayed that it works and I didnt F**k anything else up. So if I can do it, anyone else can. Thanks for the help OP.

My overhead compass failed on my 06 Tacoma and I followed the instructions on this post. It worked like a champ. As soon as I touched one of the 510 resistors with a soldering iron the resistor came loose. This told me the other side of the resistor was unsoldered. Resoldered all the 510 resistors and reinstalled the compass and 'Viola' it works again.

Great post! And an easy fix. Took me about 15 minutes. :)

I just made this fix for a coworker. I resoldered both terminals on both 510 chips. It powered right up after it was reconnected. Very quick and easy fix.
