I did not remove the board from the casing, only popped the lens cover off and then soldered as it was.

My original repair lasted from 11-09 to a few days ago. I guess it didn't like the -25 degree temps. Sending it to Siliconmethod.

just used this thread to fix my truck, and it worked great as expected. When it fails again I will most likely send it to Siliconmethod to give me the real fix. Thanks Tacaomaworld for another easy fix!

Hey thanks for this! It got to -25 here and mine crapped out. Took me longer to borrow a soldering iron than it did to repair. Now I know how cold it is outside.

After reading the threads and communicating with SiliconMethod.com, I went for shipping and pin-switch wiring for brightness control. I looked at my panel, saw the tiny burned spot on the display corner, no apparent visual problem with the "510" resistors and decided to go with his 3-yr. warranty;)

Greg's return-shipping box came as advertised with wrap inside, so I hit the PO with it, yesterday. I think it's the best deal for a known weak point.

Got it back from Siliconmethod on Sat and got it installed on Sunday. Ordered the "round trip" package on the 16th, got the packaging a couple days later, dropped it in the mail and had it back on the 28th. Not bad considering that Christmas was in there. Oh yeah, it works.

WHat if my Compass is stuck on NE, and we switched out the sensor but still problems, so has to be somewhere in the overhead temp console its self

I, also, went with Greg's package deal for repair of the compass/temp board, and it was a great choice. We decided to do the pin switch for brightness control, and I mounted it dead center of the blank square between the reading lights...perfection! I recommend "service@logicwire.net" for all such repairs...you know it will work, and it's guaranteed :)

You probably tried resetting the compass to another zone and resetting it back to yours? Check with the guy at silicon method. Looks like he's got a good handle on the unit.

I had repaired mine a couple of years ago. Got in the truck this AM to go to work and all I saw up there was DARK. I told myself OK when you get to work pull it out and go solder them again. So after it got light outside I went to the parking lot to remove the display. Well, I found out why I could not see my temp/compass display, last night when I folded up the visor I had forgotten to slide the visor extender back in on the drivers side which totally covers up the temp/compass display! Boy was I happy it was just "operator" error instead of the display going out again...Whewwww.

I've had my 08 Tacoma for 5 almost 6 years now and the temperature, compass gauge just went out a few days ago. First I've looked on ebay for a new one and they were 120$. I lived in Canada, so probably 200$ by the time I get home lol! Then I said to myself let's check on tacomaworld. Of course I find the fix over here. After reading 15 pages on this thread and buying a iron solder for 20$ at The Source (Canadian Radio Shack). I said to myself you can do it haha! I took the board out and the 510's seem to be fine, but what the heck, a little solder can't hurt. I solder the 2 chips both end and plug her back up and of course it works. You guy's made me save 140$. Now I can put electronic technician on my resume, not really!!!

Thanks again to the people who came up with a fix.

Is there any way to calibrate the temperature? After my fix, my reading is off by 7 degrees.

Excellent post! Lost one clip looked everywhere for it. Oh well still held in place with only one. You were right about those ones that snap off after taking the torx off. Well I only managed to break one of those but I still managed to save $900. Thanks

Just had my 12yr old step-son solder this for me. Easy fix and now my compass works again.

Bonus points for it being a cool little project for us to do together.

I fixed it twice myself. It's now been fixed 3 times total, but is currently not working. Plus, the factory solder broke as well. Clearly, something was designed poorly here.

(Add that to my door locks that quit working, and the A/C blower that is noisy and cuts out and various other little things, I've never been happy with this truck.)

"saw the tiny burned spot on the display corner," As I recall, many LED/florescent displays have these spots - as part of the manufacturing process.
