Where should I mount my cb radio antenna. Behind driver cab or on drivers side by the tailgate?

You ideally want to get the antenna as close to the center of the truck. That way you will get the best reception. If you PM Fire931, he has antenna mounts that slide into your factory bed rail for like 20 bucks.

2 feet above the cab is most efficient... i think that's the rule of thumb right?

The roof isn't real sturdy - the sheet metal's pretty thin there. I've got my 2m 1/4 wave mounted there.

If you do a roof mount make sure you mount a light flexible wire whip, not one of those stiff heavy fiberglass antennas.

I had a 3' firestick on the 4" magnetic base, It was always falling over just from wind resistance on the freeway. I ended up getting a "lil' will" and it does much better! Only when I'm not paying attention to height clearance and hit something does it fall off/knock over.

I have a 60" whip mounted to my roof. Zero issues.

^^^ What he said... Also you want it as high as you can get it. What will happen when you mount it on the back of your truck you will get better TX/RX wherever your truck is pointing and poorer TX/RX behind your truck. By mounting it in the middle of your truck you now have an Omni directional pattern so your signal is more like a circle... Now with that said I have a 2m fire stick mounted on my brush guard, a 2m/440 on my hood by the driver side door and a 9' whip off my passenger side rear bumper.

Edit: Also our beds are plastic so you NEED to run a ground wire from the antenna to the frame IF you do not use an antenna that has an isolated ground plane built into like the Firesticks..
