Two "different" noises while driving 2009 I4 5-speed

So, while I'm learning to drive a 5-speed, I've been keeping the cab very quiet so that I can hear what the engine is doing. Windows up, stereo off, vent on off or very low. When it's this quiet, I hear my first weird noise.

From a stop, I'll put it into 1st, and as I am letting go of the clutch, but the clutch hasn't engaged at all, you hear this "whirl" sound from underneath the hood, near the center. It sounds like a drill motor spinning up. What the heck, and is that normal? What is that?

Second weird sound might be less "innocent."

Coming to a stop, put the clutch in, take it out of gear, and an soon as you press the brake, no matter how soft, you hear a fairly audible "clink" from the front-center of the Tacoma. It's not a deep "clunk" like a bad wheel bushing, but a "clink" like two pieces of heavy metal hitting with a short distance between them. As far as I can tell, performance and handling don't change, it's just a sound that is super consistent. Normal, or an issue do you think?

 

the clunk is most likely the brake pads shifting when they're contacted by the calipers. Lots of Tacoma's do this so if this is the problem, I have not heard of a fix yet. Mine does the same thing, usually when I hit the brakes for the first couple of times then it goes away.

I have an auto so I can't really help you on the other issue.

 

I've got the 'whirl'...i think i read on here that it was ABS?

not sure about the clink, havn't heard that...

One thing to check on the clink noise...

You said it does it when you're coasting up to a stop. Does it make the noise when you're not moving, or if you're moving in reverse? If not it definitely helps support the brake theory. You could also check to make sure the actual caliper is tightened. It could be the brake pads, but it could also be the whole caliper shifting. I had that happen on a motorcycle once.
