Time to Engage?

Hey guys, Last night we had a pretty Freak blizzard in Denver and i had to drive clear home to Conifer which is about 20 miles up 285 from C-470, (for anyone who lives in Colorado) Anyways! I dont have sandbags or anything in my bed and i didnt have trouble until i started having to climb hills, As soon as i got on it my back wheels would spin and my rear would be in the left lane hahaha and id be barely trudging up the hill. I wasnt sure if it okay to engage 4WD and keep it at a constant 35-45MPH so i just keep letting off and slowly getting back on it.

For you guys going through the same horrible winter, What is in your bed? two Tubed sandbags?

As long as you don't engage 4WD when your wheels are spinning at different speeds, you will be fine. You can drive in 4WD up to highway speeds if you need to.

I would recommend putting 200lbs of sand in the bed (some will argue where, but anywhere will help in this case) and using 4WD.

You are supposed to engage it below 50. I wouldn't engage it if you are going faster than 35mph though. That's just my personal opinion.

I drove home at about 11 last night to Elizabeth from the Tech Center and the roads weren't plowed so I imagine it was a pretty similar situation. 6"-8" of slippey wet snow and no visibility. I had it in 4H when needed, basicly all of the last 10 miles. I do have 100 lbs of kitty litter in my bed as well as a box with all my recovery gear and engine fluids. If thats going to wear it out then its just going to get worn out. Thats what 4WD is for so you don't slip in shitty conditions on or off road. BTW what kind of tires are you running? That will have a big affect also.

I run the same tires and they definetly help a bunch. Try a couple hundred pounds in the bed right over the rear axel that should help. I saw some really bad accidents last night. Does everone in Colorado have no idea how to drive in snow? I have been here 12 years and still can't believe the accidents I see.

Good Advice I wouldn't either with the add hubs.. I engaged my transfer case at 45 with no front driveshaft and it went smoothly, made me more comfortable with it.

People in Colorado expect there 2011-2012 Tahoes or Big fuckin diesels to just pull them through anything. Then when all four tires hit ice and they slide off the road... They instantly blame the asshole going 20 under for conditions. Then there is always the people in there 2wd accords that fully regret making a CAR purchase in colorado as there daily.

You can engage and disengage up to 62mph (it's in your owners manual). You can drive as fast as you want with 4x4 engaged but you can't engage/disengage unless you are under 62mph.

Good point and as I often say, 4WD drive is great for traction but it doesn't do shit for braking in slippery conditions unless you are throwing it in reverse. Most people have no idea that their automatic has multiple gears and how to use them.

I'm old school, so I would only engage it on the fly when I absolutely had to.

Generally, I would know far in advance that it was needed and would plan it around a stop on the way, a red light, etc...
