It is prety sad to spread mis-information... but as long as folks know this is a public forum and not the Toyota tech hot line, then it's all entertainment for people like whippersnapper.

VSC can NOT get you stuck in sand, BS big time. Your bad driving skills are the first problem you cause to yourself... with all the good info posted, nobody should ever get stuck in sand again!

VSC is a high(er) speed stabilizing system when your truck begins to go out-of-control (slides)... it counters the slide and keeps you going the direction you are steering. It does correct rear end sliding out in corners, and so in H4 if you are driving with some speed in sand, turning your tires left and right, then you will hear the beep-beep-beep of the VSC. BUT, it is NOT causing you to get 'stuck'. Lack of floatation (tires overfilled with air for the conditions) is, along with lack of traction control (one tire in front and one in the rear spinning)... digging you in, while over inflated.

Drop the tire pressure to 15 psi, for starters... and try again.

Actually VSC engaging will cause you to go in the direction opposite to the way you are steering .

If you are turning right and VSC engages , it brakes the left rear tire to try to make you go left .

This is how a skid is corrected .

It will surprise you how well the rear is balanced in our truck... Both tires will get equal torque and both will spin if the ground below is the same for both.

If, however, one tire is over softer ground... or in the air (over a deep rut)... and you are moving slow so as not to roll past that point... the one 'loose' or low traction tire will spin for a bit, then TRAC will slow it down to transfer power to the other (traction) tire... That may not be enough or fast enough for you... So, AUTO LSD is a stronger LIMITED SLIP than TRAC alone... it doesn't cut engine output, so the transfer of power is quicker to the traction tire.

Another trick in off roading is to put the left foot on the brake and apply some force... this is the 'old fashion' AUTO LSD to transfer power when you have open differentials.

The key word is LIMITED slip... There are many ways to do it, and keeping all that mechanism out of the differential is probably better in the long run for repair costs and failing on the trail. You can drive a long way on bad brake pads... but you can't go at all if the differential is blown!

The old school folks fear what's new, or just like what they have and don't need to expand their thinking... so you see them put down TRAC, AUTO LSD, and A-TRAC... I was from the old school as well, but I am not so narrow minded to not give the new technology a try out and find it works quite well.

You really need to see that Bosch video that shows you what VSC really does... It corrects a slide to keep you going the SAME direction you are steering towards... I have experienced it on wet roads, and it works fine.

    Wut ?

When my VSC has engaged while cornering , it pushes me straight on , not allowing me to continue in the direction I was headed .

Similar to steering into a skid .

There is a big difference between TRAC and VSC as to what they are for and do... Glad you corrected that error. I just think the facts are important and all the silly playground junk you post is a dis-service to helping new Tacoma drivers... Fun is fun Christian, but can't we agree to promote the good that these trucks are and try and learn how the systems work instead of your summary dismissal of it all? I don't want to debate everything, but I do want to help others... I will be happy to show you how to use your truck in the sand and how A-TRAC works, as well. I am sure that once you see your Off Road 4WD can become a military tank off road, you will finally be happy with it!

    This video ?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUVkRYUZZ6c&feature=youtube_gdata_player

    I've seen it .

The condition I am talking about is the second example of correction in the video .

That's when my VSC engages when I am cornering , and is the nusciance engagement that comes with lifting that people complain about when they complain about the VSC being dangerous and pushing them in an unintended direction while cornering .

This^. IIRC changing VSC or ABS settings would require ECU reprogramming.
