4WD Shifting Debate

My son just picked up his 2012 last night. Swheeet truck jet black and some nice options. So the salesman is taking him through the features and talks alot about the VSC and traction control. On this truck they can be stut off. He said if your off roading or stuck in snow shut it off.

THen he tells him that should be done in neutral and when shifting in and out of 4 WD (hi or lo). DO IT IN NEUTRAL. So I added you mean...... he's driving 45 miles an hour and wants to come out of 4WD. He has to shift into N, flip the switch then back into drive? Seems like taking the truck out of gear entirely isnt too safe.

I told him on my 08, I was never told to go to N to shift in and out of 4WD. I just ease up on the gas and flip the switch. DONE. He said that puts "strain" on the tranny !!!!! WHAT ?????

So what is correct?
How do you guys do it?

 

That guy sounds like a sedan driving noob.

The correct answer will be in the manual.

but as far as all other tacoma's you can can go in and out of 4 hi whenever you please under 50mph and don't turn on pavement...

 

It says in the manual you can shift into 4H up to 63 mph and out at any speed.You only need to stop and put it in neutral if you are putting it in low range.A lot of salesman are not very up to speed on 4X4s if they do not have one theirselves.

That's when you get the manual out of the truck that HE's selling and show him the correct answer. The lack of knowledge of some sales people is scary sometimes.
