I can't believe I'm starting a "Good Deal?" thread

So if you have followed or read the "Recent Crashes" thread you've seen that some idiot cut me off on the freeway last week and got t-boned by me in my 07 DC Taco. The Taco was a total loss. I loved it before but after saving my hide in this nasty wreck I have to have another. So now I'm back in the market and have been looking at new 09's.

After a week's worth of phone calls and research I went to the first dealership that I thought was ready to make a good deal. I generally don't jump on the first thing that's put in front of me but I also think I'm pretty good at getting dealers down to rock bottom. I negotiated pretty hard on the following:

    Double Cab
    TRD Off-Road 4x2
    SR5
    Towing package
Bunch of Extra Mile package crap I don't care about including:
    Tint
    Upgraded security system
    Vehicle Shield crap
    Fabric Guard, etc. etc.

Invoice was $27,162.47. I got them to waive some of their dealer fees and hold-back crap to get me down to $26,100 + TTL. After researching a few threads here that sounds good but maybe not off the charts. Maybe I'm wrong and I should junp on this.

I also worked a deal on a more basic DC, SR5, Prerunner, with only a hitch and some of the Extra Mile crap for $24,800. Invoice on this one was $25,670. Thoughts?

No idea how your market is, but I bought at the end of last month and was able to work the dealer to about $450 below invoice. I worked over the internet with about 7 or so nearby dealers - I'm not sure how much better I could have done finishing it off harder at the dealership.

Based on my experience I would say your deal sounds pretty darn good and you should have no regrets with that negotiation. Good luck.

It is really hard to judge a good deal you just have to go with what you want and what you want to pay.

I was looking at the 08 Tacomas for over 6months before I finally got mine and believe me it was a lot of drooling over those 6months. Anyways heres what happened with me....

I paid 10bucks to a car buying website for dealership costs and expected markups. The 2008 Tacoma double cab 4x4'a at dealer cost was only 22000 or so if I remember correctly. After they do any add ons and factor in profit margin the truck at an actual legitimate price is 26000. I was lucky enough to have my brother in law recommend a guy whom he just bought an 08 tundra from and this guy was the head of the sales dept. at the dealership I got my truck and it was just before xmas so a last minute sale before the holiday.

I searched in San Diego for the truck I wanted and the dealer I test drove it at would not offer me anything less than 30k

When I went home to northern california I got hooked up with the guy he had exactly what I wanted and then some.

My trucks sticker price was 31400

I paid $28100 for a 2008 4x4 Tacoma double cab sport TRD package. With bed extender, runnning bars, and all weather rubber floor mats, and emergendy kit included. I feel like I got a good deal but who knows what others pay, I dont have a clue good thread though.

Either way I paid 2000 more than the suggested price from the car experts based off of area and want.

That sounds like a really good price..i'd jump on that

That's a good price. However, I HIGHLY doubt they negotiated away any of their dealer holdback. That would mean they make nothing on the vehicle and that just isn't going to happen. But if you got it below "invoice", you take it because you aren't getting a better deal than what you already have.

Wow...did the overall prices of the trucks go up?

Reason I ask - back in March of 07, I bought my truck new. TRD Sport access cab, auto, 4x4, tow package for $26500. MSRP (Sticker) was $29500something. I got invoice price for mine and it's 4x4.

There is a significant price difference between the access cab and double cab. There was a ramp up in price from 08 to 09 likely due the sacety equipment among other things.

To the OP, I think it is a good deal and you should go fr it if it is what you want.

If you think its a good deal then its a good deal to me :D
    Two questions.
Can you get them down on the "extras" you mentioned (dealer profit making add-ons)?
    What color?
Glad to hear you're getting back into a tacoma soon. Enjoy the adventure!

I actually have a jeep now. Imagine that.
try looking at an 08 man. I know it doesn't have all the new bells and whistles but I just got almost the same truck OTD for 21500.

    Exactly.
Toyota might have a market incentive to dealers.
I've heard that if a dealer has to sell vehicles losing they're holdback, they won't be in business long.

Good points from everyone. You're probably right about the talk of waiving hold-backs. It doesn't really matter how their getting below invoice, it's just good that they've found a way. I also assume that invoice is going to be about the same on similarly outfitted trucks regardless of dealership. This is what I'm going to verify by visiting another dealer today. I should be ready to pull the trigger soon but like I said I have a hard time buying the first night I sit down to negotiate.

As a couple others have mentioned there is definitely a possibility of buying a new 08. Toyota's currently offering a $2,000 rebate on new 08's and I've already seen a couple in the $22-23,000 range (after rebate). Definitely worth consideration. Problem here is that it's more difficult to find exactly the options and color you're looking for and I'm pretty set on what I want on a few things.

I'd say as long as you are under invoice then you are doing just fine. I ended up ~$500 under.

I just bought a 2008 TRD DC with tow for 23.8 including ttl. You might be able to push them a little more, if not get it you'll love and forget the price within two weeks.

OK, good news. I pulled the trigger on a new Taco this afternoon, but it was something totally different than what I wrote about in this thread yesterday. Here's the scoop:

    2008 SC PreRunner
    SR5
    Hitch but no tow package
Leather is being installed next week (I had this on the last Taco and wife was adamant that we get it again)
It was used in the dealer program - 8,000 miles on the odo

I got it with the leather (which is pretty much $1,200 at every dealer in my area) for $20,990, which basically boils down to $19,800 if it was just cloth interior. Most 08 DC's in my area have been listed around $22-23k with higher mileage so I was pretty satisfied.

What it really came down to is the fact that a new 09 DC (TRD or not) at the prices I listed earlier in this thread was going to end up costing $29-30k over 5 years. This one will basically run me $4-5k less over the life of the note and I'm still going to pocket $3k from the insurance settlement. I just thought it made better sense to keep the cash and still get something a year newer and 12,000 miles less than I had on my 07. It would have been cool to get an 09 with 0 miles but this is probably a smarter move, and I can even get my suspension upgraded using the new 08 TSB. So I'm a happy camper. Thanks for all the input.
