I'm so glad I stumbled across this thread today! I was going to mention the annoying whistling noise next time I went to the dealer for an oil change.

I managed to fix this on my lunch break!! Bought 1/4" drip tubing from Home Depot and used a little WD-40 to get it through the weather stripping. Took the truck for a spin and no more whistling!!! Sooo happy!

Took the brand new Taco into the dealer today. Little bit o' tension in the air. Not from me, but you know they've been told off before by plenty of people. No one likes a flawed new car. Sunday we drove all over to different fishing spots, so at each stop tape went up on new areas and came off of unproductive areas, and today the dealer tech said thanks for doing that. Saved him lots of time. Turned out to be a windshield seal problem, so Thursday they will re-seal the windshield. Hope that does it.

I had a faint whistle coming from my '13 Acc Cab TRD from the day I drove it off the dealer's lot. It depends on the wind, but it would sometimes start around 40mph with a little headwind or around 50mph with no headwind. It would always quit around 65-70mph so Interstate driving was no trouble. I placed some hard round black weatherstriping (about 1/4" dia.) in all three grill weatherstrips and so far have not heard the whistle. Although I have only driven it at whistling speeds twice since I have done it, so there is a chance it is still there. If this solves the issue I will probably replace with an aluminum rod. Thanks to whoever figured this out and posted it first.

Well my experience was the dealer could not duplicate the sound the first time I brought the truck in last month, but saw from the Internet chatter that there was an issue, and I left with a freshly washed truck. We returned last week and a bulletin was out. They are going to replace the front windshield. And wash the truck again.

The glass is due next week so I will find out if this resolves the issue.

The whistle on my brand new 2013 Tacoma never really went away. Last week the dealership kept the new truck for four days (today is the fifth day) and apparently they are unable to eliminate the sound. I gave them fair warning that either it's completely fixed, or they get me a new truck. I did not pay for a whistling truck. That sound makes the truck unusable at speeds above 40 mph, which I drive every day. For nearly a week I've been driving a Prius loaner from the dealership. Ever drive this granny car? It does not fit my work or needs at all, it's non-intuitive, all the displays, controls are in weird places. Cruise control has a sensor that automatically slows down the car (while cruising at 80 on the highway) whenever another vehicle is in front, like when someone passes on the left and pulls into the right lane in front of you, even 100 yards ahead. Where the hell is my Tacoma? Today is going to be Showdown at the OK Corral. No more excuses. I'm very disappointed that Toyota lets flawed vehicles like this into the market place.

You have to admit this is a really stupid problem to have with the tacoma. It's why I got rid of it. As, some people will do on here. We love our Lexus though. If you post the link to this forum on toyota's page a customer service rep will contact you very quickly. However, beware of any modifications, including a drip line under the hood. They threatened to void the warranty over it unless it was removed. Not very cool that was the last straw.

Toyota: What the Hell Happened?

What the hell happened to Toyota?


Toyota was once the world’s flagship car and truck producer.



Since my wife and I married over 20 years ago, except for one Subaru Forester, new Toyotas have been the only vehicles we have purchased. Overall we have been very happy with those purchases. Until now, when we joined a growing list of unhappy Toyota buyers.


A couple of years ago, Toyota experienced odd problems with cars taking off on their own, crashing, and killing the occupants. Some of those occupants can be heard crying, screaming, yelling to Toyota and 911 dispatchers as they unsuccessfully struggle to control their vehicle. Toyota sales plummeted. Significant inward analysis followed.


Enter the Toyota Tacoma, Toyota’s premier pickup truck. Tacomas have developed a loyal following, and an aftermarket add-on industry (bed extenders, cow pushers, roof racks, etc.) second to none. I myself owned a 2002 Tacoma for over eleven years and it performed flawlessly. It reinforced my brand loyalty.


But now, if you go on tacomaworld.com and other similar websites, you’ll see a growing chorus of buyer dissatisfaction. Tacomas apparently have been rushed to market without the kind of research and development necessary to work out the bugs.



I myself can tell you my own very recent experience with the new Tacoma.


It has been a deeply disappointing experience. The brand new Tacoma I purchased is flawed, and despite four visits to Faulkner Toyota (the first within days of driving it off the lot) to have it fixed, the problem persists. The truck is not merchantable. It should not be in the channels of trade, and yet here I am, another unhappy Toyota Tacoma owner.


Attempts to get customer satisfaction have resulted in arguments, outright lies by Toyota dealer employees, vague promises to fix the truck over the next month.



A month? It has already spent nearly as much time at the dealership as it has spent in my own possession, and another month is said to be needed to possibly resolve to the problem. May I say that I paid cash for the truck, and I perhaps unreasonably expect a brand new vehicle to perform flawlessly.


So here we go, watching Toyota self-destruct its last remaining stalwart vehicle. Very sad. Very sad, indeed. What happened at Toyota? No one seems to know.


For me, the Nissan Frontier is looking like my likely next pickup truck. On Consumer Reports it ranks much higher than the Tacoma with owner satisfaction. To Toyota, my lemon purchase is but one small statistic. To me, this experience is practically a change in lifestyle.

Good Luck, My tacoma was a nightmare as far as dealing with all the dealers with this issue, Tried Greenville Toyota (after 500 miles and numerous BS) they claimed it was not a safety issue, and the wind noise was normal, Toyota Dealer in Washington, NC, Reseald windshield, Grill TSB, no dice, says all they can do is report the problem to Toyota, Toyota representative says it is not an issue, and that it is normal to have wind noise, that no other owners were reporting problems. While picking up my wives lexus from Johnson Lexus, one of the service dept. members had a tacoma, was upset about this showed me Tacoma world and this fix. Tried it, lasted for a few months and the noise slowly returned. Contacted toyota, they said take it to the dealer, realized that I had, asked me to take it to Stevenson in Jacksonville. A tech at stevenson did the drip line, and it did not fix it, he was stuck on why it did not work. Toyota then had me take it to new bern where they had a '"representative" look over the vehicle, get a call two days later claiming that an unknown foreign object had been placed in the weatherstripping between the hood and grill, the factory power train warranty is to be voided due to owner modifications that effect the functioning of weatherstripping intended to protect engine components. Called, then faxed in the invoice from Stevenson showing where they had placed the drip line. Got my warranty back, it was ruled a none safety issue. I was told no one else had been reporting problems. Contacted a lawyer, he contacted the main toyota number and spoke with all the dealers (not super cheap to do). Toyota said that the case would take a while, Lawyer and myself agreed that it would be more beneficial to drop the issue due to how long toyota would drag things out. Best case was to get a full refund on the truck (paid cash). The sad part is I really really liked the truck, but that noise was maddening. I am happy now with the full size sierra, but i do miss some of the things of the tacoma. Plus this forum is a lot better then the GMC ones. Good luck to all with fighting toyota. The only way this will be fixed is A. Bad Publicity, Or B. Class Action Lawsuit

I noticed this same issue on '13 but it has been very inconsistent. There were days/weeks that I heard it consistently at 40mph but I haven't heard it recently. I mentioned it this morning to the dealer when I went in for maintenance and he said they've heard the complaint before and that Toyota acknowledges the problem with the front grill. He said that they have updated the grill and will be sending me a new one. They even let me order a color matched grill to replace my chrome one! Hopefully this turns out well!

Lucky. I think I've got both the grill and the windshield whistle. Also had this happen:

Dealer has avoided doing anything thus far. 15k mile service is coming up soon and I've been calling the dealer to harass them. They claim they will fix the problems on the next service. Been pissed up until now but If I can get a color matched out of it it might be worth the headache.

After four service tickets and about ten dealership attempts at fixing my new truck's whistle, including a day spent by a Toyota technician, I filed for arbitration. The whistle never went away. Now it is lower pitched and most audible/ loudest between 35-45 mph. Toyota knows they've got an issue. It's not isolated to my truck or your truck. It's a pile of trucks, a significant percentage of new trucks. The problem is both the grille and the hood. The hood acts like an instrument, magnifying and moving the sound around. The noise can pop up anywhere, which is why I went nuts taping everything off. The sound simply walked from one place to the next. Next steps for me are arbitration with Toyota. I'd like them to buy back my new truck and sell me a newer truck WITHOUT a whistle/ moan/ howling noise. I'll post here on my success, or failure, to get Toyota to live up to its standards.

I bought a new '13 dbl cab off road with chrome grill end of April. Had whistle noise - loud - the next day - brought it back in - took 3 tries and nearly two weeks but they got it fixed. First replaced windshield, no dice. Second, swapped out another chrome grill from another 13, no dice. Finally ordered a non-chrome grill under the grill TSB that fixed the issue. I was upset with dealership b/c they did not seem to know about the grill TSB yet I did after only a few minutes on-line. Also pissed because after the windshield replacement and the chrome grill replacement they told me to come pick up the truck since it was fixed - two minutes down the road each time by me and it was NOT fixed. Too much BS with the dealership. Have 2,500 miles now and like I said, no issues since. Worked out well in the end as I am happier with the painted grill vs. the chrome. Might plasti-dip the chrome rear bumber next.

You are 100% correct. Although my issue with Toyota stemmed from a 2009 Corolla XRs and a dead spot in acceleration and engine noise, like crickets chirping.

Dealer acknowledged problem, threw parts at it to replace what they thought was issue, had car out of service a total of a week and problem still not resolved. Dealer throws up hands and says there is nothing else we can do.

Good to see Toyota is still up to it's old tricks and not fixing known defects.

Filed complaint with Toyota Corporate, who couldn't be bothered to call back. Come to find out the complaint was "resolved" because the dealer said it wasn't an issue. So Toyota will side with their dealer no matter what. I traded the car three days later for a Honda, and when my Tacoma (which has been pretty reliable) finally outlives it's usefulness, I'll be buying another Honda.

My '13 was making the same sound. I took it in and they said there was a TSB for the 2012 model for the grill and replaced the whole grill on mine. No more whistling on mine.
