Question on LSD gear oil change HELP

i have a 2006 double cab tacoma, just reached 30,000 miles, so im doing the maintenance.

Went to the Toyota dealer and ask what gear they put in for the LSD.
He showed me a quart fo 75W-140 Toyota synthetic gear oil for $25.00 dollars a quart.

So I went to a near by Pep Boys, and they had:

Royal Purple 75W-140 Max gear oil for Limited Slip for $13.00 a quart
on the side it says contains Limited Slip Additive.

The other was Mobil one 75w-140 ..seemed like the same specs..it had an LS on the front. but nothing really said contain Limited slip additive, it was 18.00 a quart.

I went with the Royal Purple for the price, but I wanted more experienced Tacoma owners here to tell me , if this is the right gear oil.?????


If you have time to comment...what do you think about changing the plugs to Iridiums? The service manager said I shouldnt, stick with copper, it was "engineered that way"?? Thoughts?

Amsoil Severe Gear here in the diffs and transfer case with no problems.
I would go Red line or Amsoil only but I don't think you'll have any problem with RP.

 

Well I was a little concerned, after reading here I should have used 7w-90, but I have already changed it with RP 7w-140? Can you see anything happening because of the heavier weight of 140?

I live in NC.

I would go 75w90 even if I lived in NC.

 

I changed mine to Mobil 1 75-90w with LSD additive in it.The additive in the Mobil 1(syn) wasnt enough to keep the diff from chattering in a tight turn so I added an extra tube of Lucas brand LSD additive and have had no problems at all since(about 3000m ago).Bought it all at advance auto.

 

I use syn everywhere but the LSD diff. CHeap dino or at most syn blend 80W-90(as stated in the manual) for LSD applications. 3 Q for $10-15. No issues.

 

I went w/ OEM too. Last thing I want is noise.

 

What was the OEM stuff? as posted, the Toyota dealer handed me 75w-140 synthetic? Is that what you all put in?

 

royal purple gear oil is great stuff it has the additive like u said already in it. u shouldnt have any problems.

 

Some older Tacoma's have had noise with synthetic gear oil but the '09 will not have any problems using synthetic gear oil.Posi additive is also not needed.
The '09 LSD is completely electronic and is unlike the former models with mechanical LSD.

 

^^^^ Yup.... but since you have an 06 you best go with regular dino with an LSD Additive....no chatter..... the best part is that you won't have any problems AND you didn't break the bank.

 

I am fairly sure that what it was. I can't go look b/c I threw the container away.

So, whatever they gave me at the dealerships is what it got.

 

I just called another dealer in town about the gear oil, he said they recommend 80w-90..by the book but

75w-90 would be fine..BUT he said we only order by the barrel, we dont sell gear oil here!..lol Its a small town dealer near fayetteville.
