Need Opinions on Toolbox in Short Bed

I traded in my 06 DCLB for a 12 DCSB. I had a low-profile, black Kobalt brand toolbox in my LB (right behind the cab) and I thought it looked great.

I was concerned that putting the same style box in a short bed would make it look...well...retarded. It seems like it would take up about 1/2 of the bed, and I'm afraid it wouldn't look right. If anyone has pics of a toolbox mounted in a short bed, I'd appreciate seeing it and hearing your opinion on how it looks.

I ordered two of the side-mount undercover swing case toolboxes when I bought the truck, but they haven't come in yet. I'm having second thoughts about mounting them, and would like to hear opinions about them from somebody who has one as to their usefulness, quality, etc.

It shows brackets bolted to a metal bed.

 

That's another worry I have. The instructions I found online said, "For trucks with plastic bed liners, it will be necessary to trim the liner" to install them...

Yea you don't want to be cutting your taco bed liner. i would suggest another way cause i don't think your going to be doing the swing outs.

 

Yeah, I guess not. It'd be hard to fix the bed if I ever got rid of the swing-outs.

The pics I saw of the boxes in the short beds didn't look too bad. I guess I'll go that way. Hope the stealership will work with me on returning the swing boxes...

If you do a search there have been a few threads on some interesting box adaptations for the trucks.
And you don't have the swings yet so i don't see an issue.

 

I purchased a small, low profile Kobalt box from Lowes on black friday for 98 bucks then carpeted the inside. Looks great and holds a good amount of gear.

im right there with you on this one. im not looking to cut plastic or put screws in the metal of my bed. plus they look too small for most things i would be looking to put in a bed box.

another problem i have is that i need my full bed for approx 2 eight hr shifts a week. so a normal box will be a pain in the bum to have to remove and re install. I like the rail system boxes but it needs to be against the cab. and well that doesnt work either.

im shoppin a heavy duty low pro work(?) box. (maybe on wheels) that locks and i can safely lockdown in the bed.

I think it looks great. All I use my truck for is hunting and pulling my boat though.

you dont have to cut anything on the swing cases, they use brackets designed for our beds. just three screws is the only sacrifice to your bed.

 

It is a Kobalt 12" from Lowes.....I believe I paid $140 for mine. So far so good....and don't waste your time buying those clamps to hold the box in the bed. Just slide your tie down down the rail up tight to the box and it won't go anywhere. I have done that for a year now and no issues!

 

I mounted min with screws and washers into the rail behind the cab. drilled through the box washer onto the screw and took the end caps off the rail and slid the screws with the washers in and hooked the toolbox to it. Some people like to use j bolts in mounting the tool box...my method has worked pretty good. I could not get the tie downs to lock in close enough to old the box. A little extra security mounted to the rail

 

Pro's:
- TONS of extra storage!
- Looks pretty good.
- Doubles as a place to sit

Con's:
- Limits bed usage.

 

had one and took it out needed the bed space more than the toolbox

 

i have the same setup that you have, but have a soft cover with it.
