I don't think the issue is that they only make access cabs its that a crew cab raptor will cost like $55 grand

Even with the damages and recovery, I found that 4runner to be pretty capable as is, and was impressed, nice to know our tacoma's could ''do'' the same.

True, but Toyota doesn't offer a similarly equipped Tacoma off the lot. :D

I said "good long-travel setup in the front". Having 4" wider track makes it safer to remove the swaybar, which then gives you more flex than the KDSS-equipped 4Runner.

i was between a 2011 trail and the 2012 AC OR 4x taco. it was a few things for me. didn't want the extra seats so that i wouldn't be the driver all the time, the money (about 7-8k difference), and i do use my bed to cart around gear.

if i was interested in the DC, there would be no doubt i would have gone with the 4runner.

did think it over for about a week and do question the decision from time to time.

like the other guys asked... do you need the bed?

    good luck with your decision.

I have both love them both great vehicles, do you have young children, like still in car seats you. If so get the 4runner, the back seat in our Tacoma is not even close to our 5th gen 4runner. The one on t4r that is a limited done up like a trail is really a nice ride check out and search for harper7 look at his build thread it's one of the nicer ones I've seen.

The other really nice thing about the Raptor is how flexible the frame is...well until you ask the dealer to fix it and they tell you that you drove it off road so your shit ass sagging truck is not covered.

Exactly, it's about personal preference. :D

I'd rather get a base model 4x4 Tacoma and mod the crap out of it than get a TRD model. ;)

Toyota doesn't offer a similarly equipped 4Runner off the lot either.

They added mud tires and sliders to the 4Runner.

Add that to a OR edition Tacoma and it'll do the same as the 4Runner. They have the same traction toys that matter.

Probably the better way to go, although I think with the addition of DAC, VSC kill switch, and the Traction Control System That Must Not Be Named to the rear locker, the Off Road package is now finally worth its price tag.

Do I need the truck bed? I liked having the truck bed on my 2002, but I also had a shell AND bedrug... So basically like a 4Runner rear section! I don't typically haul heavy DIRTY stuff (concrete rubble) so either would work - bed w/ shell, or storage area in 4Runner. Actually the 4Runner aesthetics are growing on me.

So how much of an issue is the top-heaviness of the T4R? Is it still Nimble like the Taco?

The 4runner does not feel any more top heavy than the tacoma, I have both and even before the lift on the taco the 4 runner still had better on road handling

Gonna wheel it? Rollover will be more of an issue. Other than that, nothing major.

The way they talk up the KDSS suspension system, it sounds like the T4R will be Nimble on-road. Test drive a non trail 4runner to get a feel for it.

The kdss is for offload performance if on road handling is the only concern the limited is better suited for that but the difference is very minimal.

This might be another selling point of the 4runner these pics are from a member on another forum who was hit and rolled over several times at 60mph he climbed out and walked away from this I am very happy that my wife who drives with my children has a new 4runner. The whole story is over on www.toyota-4runner.org

I am trying to make the same decision myself, between a DC Tacoma or the TE 4Runner. I have been shopping for a Tacoma for some time, and finally am ready to pull the trigger. My wife and I stopped by the local Toyota store on Saturday to test drive a Tacoma. Across from the Tacos they had a whole line of 2011 TE 4R's. The black one is sharp, so we pulled keys for that too.

    First impressions of the Tacoma:
    1. The new center stack w/ Entune is a HUGE improvement. Entune is cool, and the larger rear-view cam is nice too.
    2. The interior materials are super cheap - felt headliner and vinyl(?) door trim. I have a similar (same?) trim in my Subaru, and it has not held up well at all. IMO, the asking price of this truck warrants better materials.

    First impressions of the 4Runner:
    1. In terms of fit and finish, it's a whole level above the Tacoma.
    2. Cargo tray was interesting; I wonder if people like/use that feature. Seems like it'd just be in the way, and raises the load height.
    3. Why only four colors? Seems like a $40k sticker should provide for more choices.

On the road the Taco felt a step quicker, although some of the numbers that I've found don't support that. Edmunds' last test had the 4R a half second quicker to 60. The only thing about my Subaru that I'll miss is the turbo, so they both felt sluggish to me. The 4Runner was smoother and quieter on the highway.

Overall, the 4R is probably ~$6k more than the Taco. For me, that would be partially offset by the ~$1.5k(?) cap that I'd want on the Taco. I think I am now leaning towards the 4R myself. Only problem is that the dealer said 2012's won't arrive until Feb. - March 2012!
