05 w/150k miles -- 14k too much?

I've had an S-10 for going on 9 years now, and I'm looking to finally get a Tacoma. I found a nice looking 05 4x4 access cab, but it's got 150,000 miles on it. Is $14k too much to put down for such high mileage? I know tacomas hold up well, but something has to give at 150k -- water pump, bearings, rust... right?

Is $14k overpaying?

I'd say that's not a horrible price. The miles seem high, but the price reflects that decently. Maybe try to talk them down to $13,000. Also, prices vary depending on location. So where are you located?

Thanks man. You think 13 might be the number? I didn't think 14 was too bad, but I've been trying to get into a Tacoma so long I'm worried I might have lost good sense when considering high mileage deals.

Being from Southern California, 4x4s have a little higher value than 4x2s because they're a little bit harder to find, and dealers know they can get a little bit more for them because there's a high demand for them. Same applies to any area that doesn't really get snow.


If you're up north, value goes down. Up there 4x4s are far more common, therefore they may be a bit cheaper. You also have to deal rust, which obviously pushes the value down.




My 4x4 4Runner had 108,000 miles on it at purchase and it was $12,000. This was in San Diego. I doubt you'd find a similar 4Runner in New York for that much. I could probably find a similar 4Runner there for maybe $10,000. Maybe less if there's rust.

 

Ah right, i live in Virginia now. Everybody's got a Tacoma here but me, and they all have Virginia Tech or UVA stickers on them, which oughta drive the value down.

 

I got my 05 trd Offroad access cab with 70k for 13500. There are deals out there Forsure.

 

I'd say that price is pretty good then.


Just make sure you check for rust beforehand. I'm not too familiar with Virginia, but it doesn't seem that people there have the same rust issues with people from Ohio or Michigan.


Also, see if the seller will let you take it to a mechanic to look it over and make sure nothing is wrong with it.

 

I think 14k is pretty close to market value for that truck. But IMO, I wouldn't pay that much for any vehicle with 150k on it though.

 

IMO, too much. Bought my 05 TRD 4x4 AC (bone stock) with 45k in late 2008 for 16k. It was in perfect condition plus it was a colorado truck... hardly any rust (no salt).

I would think around 13 would be a good point to start negotiations.

That's ridiculous. I paid 17,500 for mine two years ago with 41K on the odometer. 150K? It may run forever.......it may die tomorrow. I say keep looking. I'd buy an S10 with 75K on it for $8,000 before I would buy a Taco at that price. They are nice trucks, I love mine. But it has not been perfect, even at just under 60K miles. The 05's are arguably the least reliable year for a second gen Taco, being the first year of production.

Take your time and find someone who is ready to sell, not just willing to sell for the right price.

found my 05 prerunner with ~85k on ebay for 11500... i think i got a good deal... took me a few months to find it... i thihnk i read that toyota sells about a million tacomas in the USA each year; there are plenty out there

 

if it was 4 door yes maybe but an access cab is super cheap.... yes 12k

 

I got my 05 SR5 Access cab for 14k with 40k miles, i think they are asking too much. have you done a kbb on it? and is it SR5, sport, or offroad?

The blue book on this thing -- TRD off road -- is 13600 from a dealer. I think I'm going to look at it anyway.

In 2009 I paid $10K for an 05 TRD OR AC w/ 255K kms (~160K miles). Paint was pretty scratched from the previous owner being a carpenter and always reaching over the box sides into the box but mechanically good.(Then again sold it a year later for $13,500).

$14K seems high, but depending on condition and your local market it might be good.
