I generally trade vehicles in every 2-3 years but I will probably be keeping this one due to financial issues (I have a one month old child). I get tired of them pretty quick. My last vehicle was an '05 Nissan Altima 3.5SE bought in May '05 and traded in for the Tacoma in Aug '07. Had it in the shop about once a month for the last 6 months so that was enough for me.

I have a friend still driving his Toyota pickup. I think it is an 83 or 84. It was the 1st year before the Tacoma badge.

How could you afford to take a loss on the vehicle every 6 months?

i had my old volvo sedan for the better part of 4 years...i put probably 90-100K on it in that time...not sure because the odo went out at 190K and i drove it for another year and it only had 120K when i got it...i got rid of the volvo when repairs were more than the car was worth

between that and my tacoma i had a ford ranger for about 4 months...maybe 5...i put as few miles as possible because frankly...i hated driving it

the tacoma i've had now for 3 years...its 6 years old and has less than 100k

i plan on keeping the tacoma for as long as possible...

sometime in the next 3 or 4 years it will be taken off the road and cut up etc...but until its paid off i cant afford another car to scoot around town in...

Same here, waiting till it is paid off. Then I will get something to commute to & from work. Then use the Taco for towing my boat & yard stuff.

I plan on keeping mine well past the 100K range. All the Toyotas I've owned had easily passed the 150K range with very little repair and were still running strong when I sold them. That's the great thing about Toyotas - Take care of them and they run forever and hold their value very well. In fact, I bought my old 84 Supra with over 150,000 miles and drove it about another 50K miles before selling it for the same price I bought it!

My first Toyota I bought with 50,000 on it, sold it 10 years later with over 250,000 on it.
My 2001Tacoma had 12,500 on it when I sold it back in 05, right before moving to CO. It was a pre-runner and I knew it would be hard to sell in snow country.
In between I drove a 91 acura that I sold with over 240,000 (I thought the car would die on the drive out to CO, but it didn't, so kept driving it)

Currently, my 06 has 22,300 on it and I'd like to keep it forever.
Once it's past it's prime, I plan on doing an SAS to it :)

drove my '91 4x4 extra cab for 17 years - 249000 miles. Bought my '08 this year and sold the '91 a couple of weeks later. No question that I got my monies worth out of it. I had a '86 SR5 extra cab before that, but rolled it in '90; put 104000 on it in 4.5 years.
No reason to think my '08 won't last a decade or more with good care.

I see nothing wrong with it as long as you can afford to do so.
    My stats are:
    91 Jeep Wrangler ~ 110,000 mi "totaled"
    98 Tacoma 4x4 ~ 36,000-40,000mi ??? Sold
    2000 Eddie Bauer Ford Explorer ~ Bought in 2001 w/ 19,000 mi "totaled" in 2003 w/~ 45,000 mi
    2004 F-150 FX4 ~ 36,000mi (Left me stuck in Mud for 1.5 hours....sold the POS)
    2005 Tacoma DC 4x4 ~ 40,000mi and still going.

So basically my running tab is... until I get bored with it or wreck it. I want a new truck now mostly because I would like something bigger to pull my boat. The wife says I am keeping my Taco until it is paid off (couple of yrs). I have never actually paid-off a vehicle before. That'll be nice though.

Keep it till the wheels fall off or Toyota gives you 1.5 times the Kelly Blue Book value for it....whichever comes first. My 95 Tacoma had 145K, I would not have been afraid to drive it across America, the frame might had broke on the way but the engine would had still been fine.

I had a 2002 Tacoma 4x4 and drove till it had 120K on it. Traded it in earlier this year.

At least 5 years, by then it'll be paid off and have atleast 190,000 miles on it if it makes it that long. I haul up to 2,000 lbs. and tow up to 4,500lbs. regularly....

I will drive it into the ground, 07 has 38k on it.

I have a montero 94 model with 379k on it,burns a little oil, but still drives and runs good. Its kind of a personal challenge to see how far I can make that thing go.

You guys are trying to tell me to trade the Toys in at 100,000 miles? I had a Hilux with a 22RE and that suckor had over 300,000 miles on it and it still ran fine with a minor rebuild on the motor when the frame finally rusted out at the rear leaf spring bracket. I now have a 2001 Taco TRD and I have nothing but fun with it--and it has 127,000 miles on it. You all need to give more credit to Toyota for their engineering because they are probably the best in the market.
