Hauling my truck Tips???

Soon I will be PCSing to Scott AFB from my current assignment in Dover DE. I will be trailer my new Taco behind a huge ass Uhaul; my question to you all is do I need to do anything to the truck to protect it back there or will I be fine? I'm just wondering if I have to worry about stones or what not. I've never hauled a vehicle that I really cared about the paint on so any help would be great.

 

I hauled my Cherokee on one of those U-haul trailers from Seattle to Portland.
Everything was fine.
Make sure that the trailer brakes are working and that the trailer is in good overall condition. Tell them to find a newer one if you don't like what they offer.

I've driven across the country 4 times but no trailer. If you get into any areas where gravel is being spread on the roads for traction, your Taco will get peppered. The flaps won't catch everything.
My boat looks like a tiny shotgun blast hit it from driving over passes in the winter.
I would cover the nose at least with a tarp and lots of shock cords (bungees).
Has to be super-tight or the flapping tarp could bruise the finish.

There is a vehicle shrink-wrap service. Never used it, don't know the cost.
Worth checking.

 

You should be fine. The rear wheels on a huge ass UHaul have mud flaps behind them. Also the truck should be wide enough to protect your taco from stuff flying from the front.

oh, check the PSI on the trailer tires. i had some underinflated and they blew up in Compton. i thought i was going to die..i had to spend the night on the streets guarding my crap.

 

Thanks guys, I've heard of horror stories with the U Haul trailers, but I don't have any choice.

 

If you have a prerunner or 4wd I dont think you can tow it. I tried to go that route my last PCS. Uhaul and Peneske wouldnt let me unless I disconnected the drive shaft or something like that. Id double check, you can go on their websites and do a quote thing to see if your vehicle works. Ended up partial DIY anyways since I was enroute TDY.

 

Penske has better equipment.

get the trailer. i had to lie and tell them i was towing a smaller car. i think i used a GF car to make the reservations. my truck was only a few pounds heavier.

You just have to get one of U-haul's flatbed car trailers. That's how my dad moved his truck from Texas to here. But you're right about the 4wd part, you have to put non-drive wheels on the ground or you have to disconnect them to flat tow which is a pain to do.

 

I would only ever use flatbed towing so the truck is on the whole trailer, and they still wouldnt rent me one either of them, call and ask, you'll see.

You can actually flat tow a Tacoma. You have to have a drive shaft disconnect installed, but it can be done. It costs approx. $1500.00. The only reason I knowabout this is becuase I had a motorhome and was looking at how to tow a Prerunner behind it. Its not worth the trouble to flat tow.

reason why is there is a mechanical oil pump for the gears..

if you flat tow using a dolly then you have to remove the rear drive shaft..otherwise its certain you'll fry the tcase

Thanks agian, I was planning on putting it on a flat bed car hauler all along. I was most intrested if anybody had any tips for keeping the rocks and shit off the front end.
