I think Tacos are nicer but I don't hate the style on the Hilux. Definatly would buy one and not just for the diesel.

In many parts of the world, people use compact pickups like the Hilux for work.
The low-hanging bumper provides a lower step-up height for reaching into the bed. It also gives better crash compatibility with cars. It's easily removed for off-roading.

"The Toyota Hilux is a series of compact pickup trucks produced and marketed by the Toyota Motor Corporation. Most countries used the Hilux name for the entire life of the series but in North America, the Hilux name was retired in 1976 in favor of Truck, Pickup Truck, or Compact Truck. In North America the popular option package, the SR5 (Sport Rally 5-Speed), was colloquially used as a model name for the truck, even though the option package was also used on other Toyota models like the Corolla. In 1984, the Trekker, the camper version of the Hilux, was renamed as the 4Runner in Australia and North America, and as the Hilux Surf in Japan. In 1995, Toyota introduced a new pickup model, the Tacoma in the United States, discontinuing the Hilux/Pickup there. The 4Runner is now a full SUV, and the more recent models do not resemble the Tacoma."

As you can see - the Tacoma exists in N. America -- it is a Hilux everywhere else. There are some differences - and notably among others are the extra safety features that must be built into a truck to be sold in N. America. The information in the first paragraph was from Wikipedia.

lowest trim model (cheapest)= ugly bumper and by the way those 2 hilux that you saw are 2.5 turbo diesel engines. The highest trim level has the 3.0 turbo inter-cooler engine with this rear bumper .. they are nice looking trucks

I don't think the front clip is that flattering but I'm sure a taco one would fit with a little work.

I like the looks as well as the diesel engines. I do get pretty disgusted with the gov. not allowing all those great diesels out there to be sold here. There is a diesel Jeep Wrangler offered outside the US that I would love as well.
