How many replacement windshields?

In one week I'll have had my Tacoma for five years. In 85k miles the windshield has required replacement five times, one per year, and repairable chips have always been fixed ASAP before they get bigger. In the name of weight saving, cost saving and pedestrian saving (?) Toyota probably went to thinner glass along with most other manufacturers. So, I'm curious, how often have you had to replace your Tacoma's windshield?

 

I think you might be onto something(or just badluck), never had chips on any of my other cars but have had 2 on my windshield in the last 3 months that I have had it, I need to go get them fixed too.

WTF are you guys doing to your windshields??

 

130,000kms, (approx. 82,000 mi.) On my 3rd. Cracked all along the bottom, started as a stone chip, (fucking Alberta roads!) the the defrost took care of the rest. I've been averaging one a year for the last three years. Gonna wait until this one falls in my lap before I shell out the 500 bux CDN for a new one.

 

How many will insurance replace before they get pissed or jump rates?

 

In BC I can get away with about 1 a year without to much hassle. That being said my comprehensive deductible is about the same as a jobber replacement. I usually choose the latter. ICBC is the anti-christ!

 

Here you don't have to pay a deductible for auto glass. Some law in Florida. My normal deductible is $1000

When I bought my '08 it did not have the factory glass which means it was replaced AT LEAST once before I bought it. In the first month I had it I picked up a chip that immediately spread larger than can be repaired. Had it replaced a few months ago then picked up a new chip last week. I'm hoping I can schedule a repair before it spreads.

EDIT: I like the poll results so far. Either you replace it every year, or you never replace it.

 

About 629 miles from Miami but no gravel roads around here. Cant remember the last time I saw a gravel road

I wonder how much aerodynamics have to do with it and how much is just the glass. I drove Rangers for 15 years and only had to replace one every 5 years or so. Still not worth going back to Ford.

 

Every damaged windshield I've had was caused by oncoming big rigs on two lane highways.

Besides, if you follow the semi close enough that you're drafting off of him, the rocks will hit your bumper or grille instead.

 

never replace, but it should be. the truck was about 3 months old and caught a rock below the wiper and put a few cracks in the windshield but none are in my line of view when looking straight ahead so I never bothered getting it replaced.

 

About 2 weeks after owning my Frontier I had a damn boulder pop up from a Ranger in front of me and hit the windshield(going 55mph), chipped it to hell and had Safelite(through insurance)fix it.

I think youre right about the thinner glass maybe because my 2010 Ford Fusion had oodles of rocks hit the windshield(at highway speeds) and it NEVER chipped(but then again it had some super thick acoustic glass).

 

Guess I've been lucky. I still have the factory windshield on my 08. I bought the truck new & hope to keep the windshield much longer. Hope I didn't jinx myself now.
