2012 4.0l engine from 4 Runner vs Tacoma

I was doing some poking around and see that the 4 Runner 4.0L engine is rated to make more power than the Tacoma version. Anyone know the differences in the engine?

The 4Runner 4.0L engine, as well as the same engine in the FJ Cruiser and Tundra has dual VVT-I. The Tacoma 4.0L has only single VVT-I which is why you'll notice a difference in hp, torque and fuel economy.

Why Toyota didn't update the Tacoma 4.0L V6 to dual VVT-I is a mystery to me. Very frustrating as well!

For both vehicles 4x4, 4.0L V6 and automatic transmissions:

5th Gen. 4Runner: 17 city/ 22 hwy mpg
Tacoma: 16 city/ 21 hwy mpg

5th Gen. 4Runner: 270 hp/ 278 lb.-ft torque
Tacoma: 236 hp/ 266 lb.-ft torque

So 1mpg more for both city and hwy, 34 hp and 12 lb.-ft more for the updated 4.0 over the Tacoma 4.0.

The hp/tq #'s for the 4Runner are on 91 octane IIRC. My guess is the Tacoma is also tuned for more low-end and mid-range power.

As far and I know the block, heads, intake manifold and exhaust manifolds are slightly different. If you want to drop one in you need the complete engine wiring harness and ECU

With a 2012 that would be the very last thing I would be thinking about. Buying a TRD blower is probably cheaper than doing the actual swap and you get more power.

Just saying...

The tacoma on 91octane rates 246hp, not sure on torque though. #'s from X-ru

Dual VVT-i revs a little higher to get the higher tq and hp numbers.
270hp @ 5600 RPM, 278tw @ 4400 RPM

Single VVT-i
236hp @ 5200 RMP, 266tq @ 4000 RPM

I haven't seen dynos but my guess is that the single vvt-i have a flatter torque curve at lower rpms that's why Toyota has not updated it.
