Factory Nerf Bars... Chrome to Black...

The new TRD Sport came with the factory chrome nerf bars, not my favorite but they were on it... i have to say these are some of the cheapest I've run across... in any case, I decided to go with black. At some point I'd like to add/build a functional set (like many here)... until then... this is a really inexpensive change...

 

Looks good man, I'm not a fan of chrome either.

Did you sand and prime them?

I used fine wire brush on a drill to rough up, cleaned good with acetone and 4-coats of bed liner paint (no primer needed). It's a textured finish... I thought about just having them Line-X but I think the coat will be too think for the end caps to go back on.

As a side note, if you want add more structure a piece of flat iron running the length will bolt right up under the bottom and not be noticeable...

 

Did yours have the plastic inserts in them? And if so, how did you get them off, did they just pop off when you pry a bit?

Edit: I'm planning on doing my rear bumper and tube steps black this spring/summer...too cold to shoot right now.

 

The have the plastic inserts, once you pull them off there are "nuts" on the bottom that screw off, be careful and take your time on/off... 7/16 and 1/2" and you're ready to go...

 

Drats, just looked at your pictures again....closer...mine are tube steps...I'll figure something out I guess to get them off, otherwise I'm gonna paint over them and say eff it.

 

just mask around the step pads
