A little of this and a little of that.
I changed the oil and filter for the first time at 1000 miles. Replaced with synthetic oil at that time.

Be warned that the oil filter may be a little hard to remove. I think Attila the Hun did the install on my factory filter.

It's not new, it's not Mexico
I did mine at 5000 miles, but my driving conditions are normal.
How many threads about this are there now?

I did my first oil change at 5000 miles. I switched to synthetic at that point (Mobile 1). My driving is mostly around town. Not a lot of highway use, maybe 30%.

If you plan to get a new truck every 4 years/50k miles it won't make a bit of difference. If you want to keep it 15 years, I'd change it at 1k and again at 5k with non-synthetic.

I brought it to the dealer at about 4200 (had a longish trip planned soon afterward). The dealer I went to has a good service department and are capable of the oil change. If you have a new truck i think the first 5 or 25,000 are covered.

i had a lengthy conversation with my toyota salesman about this subject. i started talking about a 1000 mile oil change to remove contaminants and what not from the new engine. i've done this on almost every other car or truck i've ever owned from new. but he basically talked me out of it. he was a real gear head, and said back in the day, when tolerances were lower, that would have been a wise move, but with today's modern engines that it was not really necessary.

i'd actually like to see someone who has done a 1000 mile oil change do an oil analysis on it and see what, if any, contaminants are in it.

I had my first one done at 4500 mi since I had a long trip planned. The dealer put synthetic in at my request at no cost to me. I plan to run synthetic since the 2012's run it. They said they would continue to put in synthetic every 5000 mi since that is my internval.

OK, just a thought: I have heard that the first oil in a new engine was an oil designed for 'break in' and should NOT be changed before the first recommened interval. I had thought about changing just the filter if this were true.
Could be a horse poopy of a story though : )
Ever heard that about the 'break in' oil?
Yeah, thousands of questions on this topic, but since new trucks are being purchased every day it's a good one.
I also wonder about keeping petroleum based oil for the first 5 or 10K miles to allow some 'break in'....then changing over to Synthetic.....we've gone deep into this area on another forum but it's always 'new' to somebody...LOL.

I'm at 3000 miles, waiting until I get to 5000, then switching it to Mobil1 synthetic oil. I got my best gas mileage during the 2nd or 3rd fill up of this vehicle @ 19.5 mpg while the temperatures were still consistently above 50 deg in the morning back in October. I've been getting roughly 18.5 - 18.9 mpg with a 70% highway 30% city style comute every day, with probably 1-2 WOT acceleration events per week as well as left lane driving. It would be nice to at least get to that point again.

My dealer told me that they won't replace my oil until 10,000 miles.
They will just reset the light and rotate my tires.
    Anyone else being told this?
(500 miles on the truck at this time.)
